Planning on shooting an ISS Solar Transit... so figured I'd get some practice shooting some sunspots. After a couple of days I figured I'd keep going as long as the weather cooperated... which in this case was only 8 days.

First the link to the timelape (not sure if I'm able to embed)

And here is a couple of stills. Still trying to find the "sweet spot" of sharpening to bring out the granulation... first shot wasn't enough... second is too much. I'll get there.

And for equipment... 7D, Sigma 150-500+1.4X, Baader Solar filter, 1/3200s, F/9, 400ISO

nice setup.
On first picture I see too much of Chromatic Aberration. Just run it through software of your choice and you should see the benefit of it.
BTW why ISO of 400 when you are taking image of source of light? Go lowest possible.

I'm afraid you will get no granulation - only noise. I doubt the Baader allows you to see individual "cells" on the surface of the Sun - you will need to shoot in other wavelengths I think.

Quality will improve radically if you shoot 50 frames and stack them (Registax for example). You can already see two differently coloured areas in the sunspots, which is very good for one shot.

Thanks Samsen, LOL... I hadn't even noticed that CA. I usually have that stuff autocorrected in LR, but it appears the taped pins on the teleconverter caused it not to work on this (and many other it appears) occasions. I'll keep an eye out on that in the future for sure.

As for why I picked 400 ISO, my ultimate goal is the capture an ISS transit(Hopefully on Tuesday) and these started out as just practice for that which morphed into another project. From doing lunar transits and other ISS shots, I've found I need a minimum of 1/1600s to freeze the ISS. With 100 ISO, I was getting anywhere from 1/250 to 1/1000 which wasn't going to be fast enough for my ultimate goal.

Thank you ecce_lex, that is good info to know. Not much out there for noobs like me. Glad to know I've just been doing it wrong for only a week ;)

One day I did take a video(no idea why) and just did a quick and dirty 50 frame stack of it . Even though it's smaller I can tell a big difference in IQ.
