I shoot most of my pics in raw + JPEG mode. I use adobe bridge and photoshop for my post processing.

With the number of pics now getting into the 20-30k range, I realize that keywords are essential to identify pics. I am not a pro.

My question:

Is there a way that I can add keywords to the raw and JPEG image at the same time ?
Related question - if there is a way , does itatter that the raw and JPEG files are in two different directories? I have a folder for a quarter Nd inside each is a folder for raw, one for jpg and one for processed output.

Thanks in advance.

Why?

What do you do with the jpeg images that is worth the extra hassle?

There are times when friends want a pic from an event. It typically takes some effort to process from a RAW image to give them an output. For these requests, I quickly pick out the jpgs and give it out after resizing.

One option I have considered is not shooting jpg at all. But my wife prefers to browse the pics and upload/share using picasa from the jpegs. And now that I have raw and jpeg, wondering if there is an easy way to tag both at the same time for future use....

Yes, you are right. I don't want the extra hassle :).

I prefer to shoot raw only. If I want a real quick 'n' dirty jpeg then I'll use FastStone, which extracts the embedded jpeg (produced at the time of shooting using the in-camera settings). It's also good for browsing images.

Is the hassle of having that one quick .jpg less than dealing with the hundreds that you create store and deal with later?

Why store hundreds of jpegs? Create the jpeg, print it or email it or post it to the web then delete it. Just save the raw and the recipe for creating the jpeg again if it's ever needed.

That was my point. For the time saved in having one premade you .jpg you have all those .jpgs to be dealt with. I wouldnt save them either. But given the OP's request he seems to be inclined to do so.

Apply one of the default presets (basically the same as an OOC JPEG) and export. Where is the effort?

As to answering the actual question - you can add keywords to the import dialogue and they will be added to all the images during import. Post import the only way I can think of would be to add all the images to a collection, then select the collection, then press Ctrl A to select all the images and then type the keywords. Not exactly quick and simple.

Good points. My collection currently does not have keywords.

Before I started putting effort into adding keywords, wanted to understand if could cover jpgs as well in one shot.

The answer seems to be no and I am tempted to leave the jpgs just for the missus for her to pull up prints from Picasa with minimal edits.

I am not inclined to delete or stop shooting jpgs and get Picasa to read directly from my raw images. For a quick and dirty export, the raw images usually need adjustments.

You can temporarily shift your JPEGs to the RAW folder. Then in Bridge select the images together and apply the keywords. Once you are done, sort by image type and select all JPEGs and move them back to their own folder.
I haven't tried this but it should work I think.
