Hi,
I'm new here so, hallo.
I've been using a heavy DSLR (Nikon, sorry) but sciatica means I can no longer carry around a heavy camera with big lens so I've been looking at the Canon SX50. From what I've seen it takes great pictures. Glad of any comment.

It is a good little camera.

What do you want to know about it?

This thread shows what it can do :

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1237317

BUT I'd see if you can try it somewhere - it's not the smallest and has lots of buttons and dials all over the place !

So far though I like mine.

Hey Viscountdriver,

You can weigh the advantages or disadvantages, but after much research I opted to get my wife the Canon Sx-40. Mostly because it has a much wider Aperture than the Canon Sx-50 (f2.7 versus f3.4) not to mention it cost less.

I replaced her aging Sx-1 as well as my Mother-In-Laws Sx-10. The Sx-40 is much superior to those IQ wise. In fact, the image quality is outstanding. I'm going to have perform a thorough comparison with it and my 40d DSLR at some point just out of curiosity.

I also tested it against a Fugi X-S1 which is often lauded as the best SuperZoom Camera with a 2/3 sensor. That was a good camera as well; however, the Canon Sx-40 was equal in IQ but it was superior to the Fuji with Image Stabilization and Focusing. I never have a problem focusing with the Sx-40 (quick/accurate) and the IS is just excellent...

I gave up my DSLR and switched to the Canon SX50 because I found I tended to leave the DSLR and its big lenses at home.

The Canon SX50 isn't much smaller than a DSLR but with the 50x zoom lens in, I don't have to carry anything else.

I am not a professional photographer, but I found that getting the SX50 really revived my interest in photography again and I am taking a lot more pictures with it.

My assessment as an amateur is that it is a great wildlife camera, but struggles in indoor, low light situations. Overall a great camera, but I am thinking of a second, pocketable camera for indoor shots.

Here are some shots I have taken with it.

FWIW, I just ordered the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 for work. (I found carrying a 7D with lens on jobsites to be somewhat obtrusive).

Similar price point, and although I liked the idea of the 1200mm zoom capability with the Canon, the Leica 2.8 lens sold me on the Lumix, especially when I saw I could always buy a 1.7 extender if needed.

Delivery next week so time will tell, but the reviews were favorable and at least it will always be with me rather than grabbing 2 backpacks full of gear and the worry of theft or damage. Those WERE some great shots tho, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

That pretty much says it, though I would add that if your wildlife is moving a lot, the shutter lag can be in issue when you're trying to capture a specific moment. I have also found that when shooting into the sun, especially over water, the glare can wash out the EVF and make it really tough to find your target if you're near max focal length. That's a pretty specialized limitation that doesn't come up all that much, though.

My first post to this GREAT forums site....I also purchased a SX-50 about two months ago.

I have been using a T-3i for the last two years and I shoot mostly wildlife, and of course always wishing my lens would get me closer. Photography is just a Hobby of mine so it was hard to justify spending a couple of thousand dollars for a longer lens and I still wouldn't get as close as I would with a this SX 50 at $300.00. I have compared pics. taken with expensive bodies and lens's, and pics. taken with the SX-50, most of the time I cant tell the difference and I'm referring to the quality of the image.
So happy with this camera :)

I have bought A Canon SX 50 HS - I use it as a substitute to my two SLRs 60D and 5D MKII - let's say it how it is: cannot compare it to the above cameras with an L lens: but it is amazing what it can do - it is a very good camera to carry with you while on a holiday, because it has everything you desire in it - it takes amazingly clear and beautiful pictures - even at zoom level I must say, as well. I am very very happy that I've got it and use it most of the time - with a fast card installed inside it you can also take several shots at a time. One thing I cannot get used to - in the menu it has a copyright entry - I've entered my name but still cannot get anything on the photo itself - how does this work?

I don't think it prints it on the image, just puts it into the EXIF data.

The more you use it and get to know it the more you'll like it.
