Dropping in to Sulman in the first few laps of the race. I love this spot as the cars are actually higher than you are, and are aiming right at you as they turn in. It's an awesome place to watch fast cars. I used the 135L for these first two shots

Eventual winners. Team consisted of Craig Loundes, John Bowe (two of the most experienced Bathurst campaigners) Mika Salo and Peter Edwards (the owner)

My attempt at a bit of arty stuff with the sigma 8-16 The Ferrari about to drop into the dipper. In the background you can see conrod straight and the grandstands/pits etc towards top left of the pic It also shows the altitude change of the track.
From wiki:

The track is 6.213 km (4 mi) long, and is technically a street circuit, as the circuit is a public road when no racing events are being run, and there are many residences which can only be accessed from the circuit.
The track is an unusual design by modern standards, with a 174 metre (570 foot) vertical difference between its highest and lowest points, and grades as steep as 1:6.13

The rest of the shots are with the 100-400. The big Merc powering down the short straight towards Forest Elbow. The Mercs sure have some big power around here, and hows about the sound?! Gave me chills everytime they came past.

Factory Nissan back at the mountain but their race didn't end well. A Ferrari crashed and left liquid on Macphillamy park corner, a 240 Km/hr blind corner and the nissan drove into it whilst it was stopped. The nissan tore out most of the right side of the car, and the Ferrari didn't fare much better.

Coming over skyline and dropping into the esses.

The track for those that haven't been there is very undulating and is no place for the faint hearted. This is the drop onto Sulman curve. This is a 4th gear corner, so they aren't blousing around, especially in the A class cars.

coming up through Reid Park with Bathurst down in the Background. I had to leave around lunchtime so missed out on shooting this spot in the late afternoon light.

I have a bucket load more on my flickr if anyone wants to check them out.

I forgot to mention, have at them, I am here to learn from you guys that do this stuff all the time. Only problem is it will be another year before I get back to a race as I don't go to many car races!

Nice set, both here and on your Flickr. I was hoping someone would post some shots from that race.

Cheers sgt and magoo. Pushbike up the hill is going to be a serious workout!

I drove from Newcastle at midnight after not sleeping, got there at 4AM, slept for half an hour got tickets, did a pit walk then headed up the top for the start, left at midday, got home at 4 to watch the final two hours on the TV! big day, but what a great race it was!

I watched the last couple of hours on the tv, but having seen it I am determined to try and get there next year (or sooner if I can, and there is something racing).

I really like the first and last shots, as well as the Ferrari dropping in to the dipper. Love the perspective that shot gives.

October (I think) you have the Bathurst 1000 with the V8's. First time I have seen this class and I was mighty impressed, not only with the quality of cars of course, but the racing was intense for the whole 12 hours. The crowd is much less for this race over the 1000, but that means it's easier to get around and re-park your car in a different spot......It's a big track to get around! I would have liked to go on Saturday too as they had a few other classes racing, but time did not allow it.

Great shots. I watched the stream for several hours. Were you shooting from spectator areas or were you inside the fence?

@Auto Yes, All from spectator areas. I wish I could have gotten to some other inside spots. Honestly you need two days to shoot this track I reckon. And def need media access to even get to some of the corners.

@Rivas Thanks mate! I have been to the track about 4 times now over the years and always love sitting at this spot. They used to race bikes here up until about 2000 btw......now THAT is brave!

Little bit of info for you, re pic #1 if you look at pic 7 you will see a twin warning light to the right of image. For image #1 I was just to the side of that behind the second fence.

Great shots! I watched the full race online here in NZ. Definitely worth watching. Hopefully it gets a bit more promotion and coverage next year. The TV really doesn't give you any idea how steep that place is.

Great shots! I love the 8-16 shot, I've wanted to do a shot like that for ages but can't find a good spot on a track near here to get it :p I watched this race on TV and was very disappointed with who finished first  I love cars and motorsport but this year (hopefully) will be the first time I will be going to Bathurst. AFAIK, I will bring 1D III, 6D, 17-40, 70-200 IS II and 400 5.6. I might have a 1.4 or 2.0 TC by then as well. Do you think the 400 would be unnecessary? I definitely could do with ~600mm at Phillip Island and Sandown (in most spots, other than panning). Thanks!

Cheers stang. A 400 is never unnecessary! But having said that, across the top you are very close to the action, as they come across macphillamy and through the chase 400 will be handy for sure. i never leave home without my 100-400. And when your 400 is too tight your 70-200 will be perfect across the top
