Tried a google and forum search with no luck.

Anyone think the they will make a "prosumer" version 2 of this lens? Fixing the problematic AF and noticeable softness at 1.4?

My guess (even though it's not really needed) they will as IS as with the 35 F2 updated lens (which i own and love).

Thoughts? Comments?

Heya,

With Sigma coming in and bossing around the 35mm and 50mm market, I'm sure Canon will have to answer sooner or later, and release something to compete. Sure, they have their 50mm F1.2. I guess Canon is ok with going from 50mm F1.4 to 50mm F1.2, with a, what, $1k difference? If they just released a 50mm F1.4 IS lens, it would rock the boat at $500~600 to give a better option (and if built with the quality of the current 35mm F2 IS, it would be a great lens).

I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

Very best,

Even if there's an updated 50mm with IS, it's won't be a 50 1.4 IS but most likely a 50f2 IS.

And it will be $699 minimum.

There is already a very strong rumor that Canon are bringing out a new 50mm with IS this year, but its a f/1.8 not a f/1.4.....according to the rumors.

^^^ An f/1.8 might not be so bad if it's a great performer wide open. I may be tempted depending on the price as I shoot my f/1.4 at f/1.8 - f/2.2 anyway not just for sharpness but also DOF.

I bet it will cost a lot more than the 50mm f/1.4, but i agree, it will have its uses and i might be tempted. I never use my f/1.4 without stopping down to f/2 anyway, so if the optics in the new lens are decent enough to use wide open (like the 35mm f/2 IS is) then i can find a use for it.
If nothing else it will create 1000's of threads and heated discussions about how Canon dont care and why IS is never needed on a prime etc etc :-)
