Noticed a lot of recent activity on eBay with many selling Canon 800mm f/5.6 USM Lenses.

The main issues for me

  • The lack of any of sellers having credible history (Realize this isnt super important but when their history has nothing for years. This and its almost all of them)
  • The fact all are popping up within a week
  • Most have no information about the actual lenses other than a photo or two
  • None have required minimums- seems nuts to me as these are not cheap.

I contacted the one seller and asked about the S/N and if this had been pulled out of the box. His response was "its new"

I've throw my hand in on some only to be "outbid" by someone with zero feedback

Seems like a shilling game but figured Id ask since most on here would know if any are legit. Not too worried as I've been down this road before and PayPal and my bank CC both refunded me without issue and went after the seller.

Thoughts?

Why do I get the feeling these are all being sold by Nigerian princes and bank managers.

There's nothing to worry about. I just won the UN lottery so I might use my winnings to buy a few of these.

OCJ,

Stay far, far away. It is a scam and you shouldn't feed into it regardless of how protected you may feel by your credit card company. The scammers will continue to cast lines into the water as long as the fish keep nibbling at the line.

If the red flags are popping up, that should be enough to tell yourself it's not worth the hassle.

Cheers

Congratulations! Today must be your lucky day, because I just learned of a new investment opportunity that I'd like to extend to you. If you purchase an 800mm lens for me with your lottery winnings, I will be able to take your generosity and return it back to you threefold. That's right... Buy me an 800mm lens, and within 30 days you will receive THREE 800mm lenses for your trouble!

Just the fact that you are posting about it means something obviously not sitting well with you.

Its not- eBay has no direct line to go into and report an issue. Instead they try and place everything in a cute little box and if the box doesn't fit? Your out a luck. This is nuts

There are now 5 on now that have started with no reserve with sellers with no backgrounds as in no ratings?? All claim new or New other (see details) with no details listed.

Ive worked in the auto auctions for years (past career) and saw 1st hand how shilling and fraud screw people. I'm just trying to see if "we" the photography types are the new target.

I am in the market for a nice 800mm and this will scare the legit folks off leaving these idiots to cause mayhem. Frustrated.
