So I was correct, and it's not an insult or attack on you.

No problem, I didn't think it was. If you asked me for $20 though, I'd be upset.

So you admit that we totally missed the ding and didn't specify it in the auction, and now the buyer is ONLY asking for a measly $20 reimbursement for an item over $1200 and you refuse?

Tbh I'd just give him the $20 and move on. I'm actually surprised that's all he's asking....

True. But if it's ONLY a measly $20 reimbursement, why ask at all? How did he arrive at that price? Why not just say, "dude you missed this in your description. Oh you didn't know? No problem, everything works great, just look a little harder next time."

The buyer is an OCD moron that probably puts his lens in a climate controlled humidifier and is probably treated better than his children

I can see this guy using a loupe while wearing cotton gloves to carefully mount his lens on his camera to prevent "damage"

Different strokes for different folks. It's like your neighbor who buys a $120k Porsche to keep it in his garage.

Ugh, I feel for you. I had something similar happen to me on a sale (I think) via ebay. The guy sent me hugely magnified pics and noted that the felt lining around the back opening of the lens had been creased/nicked/disturbed - said that maybe, just maybe that was evidence that I had been poking around in the lens with a screwdriver or something. Ugh. He threatened to file a complaint with paypal if I didn't offer a refund/discount/whatever - at that point I was done with him so I told him to do it up. I got the notice from paypal and they slammed the door on his face almost immediately.

If you get those marks from mounting and unmounting a lens, you're rough with your equipment. I have plastic mount lenses on old canon bodies that don't look like that. Does it matter? Not sure, probably not. It's just a clue how the previous owner treated it.

plastic wont dent like metal. This is normal wear and tear if you simply miss the mount (who hasnt). It's akin to asking complaining about a used car because the breaks are worn and "like new" in the description.

There's a first for everything! I have had my fair share of bad buyers, including:
1. Someone trying to return a damaged lens that did not match my lenses serial number (be sure you always record that)
2. Someone who used the lens for a shoot and a week later decided he wanted to return the lens due to lack of funds. Sorry, I do not run a rental company.

lol no way, drop the price a lil then we talk :)

tbh if I was the buyer, no amount of reimbursement will be enough. The fact that there's a dint on the lens which was listed as like new condition would have put me off so much that I'd just send it back to you for a refund....

Besides ~$1250 for a 3rd hand lens (meaning no warranty) is definitely on the high side imo, I can get a brand new one for $300 more. But that's just me.

At the end of the day the buyer isn't asking for a ridiculous amount but $20, so just give it to him and move on...no biggie ;)

Or you can simply just ignore him I guess, until he files a complaint via Paypal :p

You're right. If the nick to the metal mount doesn't make you happy, no amount of reimbursement will please you, so why $20?

Even if you have a second hand lens WITH receipt, Canon still does not technically honor the warranty. It really is a toss-up if anything goes wrong and you send it it for warranty repair.

I agree, I want the sale over as well, but I'm not interested in being bullied by "Pay me this amount or I'll leave you poor feedback." Even if I were to reimburse him, chances are he still would leave me poor feedback.

What I would do is tell him to send it back within 7 days in same condition received and you'll give him a refund minus your shipping cost and fees or he can keep it as is. If he chooses to keep it, then sale is final.

This is what I would have done.

In my opinion, there is nothing to be concerned about whatsoever. I would consider that mount to be in "almost new" condition. I wonder if anyone commenting to the contrary has ever even seen a mount that was truly worn. My mounts get, like, 100 times more wear than that before CPS replaces them. A tiny little almost-microscopic nick . . . it's hard to believe that anybody would even bother to notice such a thing. Lenses are tools, not showpieces.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I dont think ive ever even looked at my mounts. They have always attached so i havent had the urge to find microscopic scratches on them and complain.

I would have just gave him the $20 probably even though I think his claim is ridiculous.
