That kind of "damage" could occur in a camera shop when testing a new lense prior to purchase.

IMHO it indicates use and not abuse. A similar nick to the filter threads would affect function but not the lense mount which I'm assuming is aluminum.

Nope - it's brass, with chrome over the top - its actually designed as a weak link, to break before it damages the lens or body when excessive force is applied - it's cheap and easy to replace.

A little ding like that is normal, you can see a tiny wear mark on the left edge of the bayonet too.
Neither will affect the lens mounting.
If you are really worried, canon will happily replace the mount, and charge your for the privilege - I guarantee it will have marks like that on it within 6 months, unless you never change the lens.
If you are using your camera, wear is inevitable.

For what it's worth, one of the pool lenses at work has most of the chrome worn off the bayonet lugs, the corners are rounded, and it looks terrible - the lens still works fine though, and is one of my favorite lenses to use (canon did replace the bayonet at the last checkup though, after it had been dropped and wasn't focusing properly)

Brass is used on a lot of fittings. I agree that I wouldn't be concerned with the nick. On the other hand, as mentioned earlier. Never list something as new, unless you used it once and didn't like it. Or something along those lines.
