Just picked one up today.

It seems Sigma have discontinued the Canon mount in this lens...it's not on their website any more and the shop rang Sigma to find out if they could order any more. The distributor said they'd none left in stock and wouldn't be getting any more.

I hope I made a half decent decision...

It's still there at least on the USA site. Are you talking about the older non OS one?

No, that's the one, it's the Canon mount that appears to have been discontinued...follow the link above and the only choices are Sigma and Nikon mounts.

Seems like a cracking lens and no sign of a replacement as yet (if indeed it is being discontinued).

It was just discontented last week. Maybe a 50-150 f2 on the horizon.....or maybe they just weren't selling enough units to make it worth their while to keep it in the line up.

Either way its an amazing lens and sigma will still warranty it if anything should go wrong so don't worry and enjoy it.

Interesting. I would think if they are discontinuing it, it would be with all mounts. I think this is a teaser alert for the 50-150 OS sports version being announced. They usually release new lenses with Canon mount first because it's the largest market.

I'd heard rumours of a 50-150 f/2 but also rumours that Sigma wouldn't be offering any replacement due to slow sales. An F2 would add a point of difference and may attract more buyers.

My guess was that it would be some time yet before anything new's available and even then it could be a fair bit more expensive. Alternatively there might not be any replacement so I decided to play safe and pick one of the last ones up.

So far it looks like a cracker...I love having the 20mm below 70.

Ugh. So probably better to purchase now before Canon stock is no longer available...and before the resulting price jump because it is now an unavailable model that people feel is good... of course unless they announce something to replace it that is better at similar price... but worried that might not be the case! The more I think about it the more I realize I can't seem to come up with any other lens in that particular slot (fast aperture zoom at that price point that actually seems to get nothing but solid reviews).

I had planned purchasing it 6-8 months from now but might have to break fiscal responsibility now :(

I don't know is sigma will be replacing it. It's an amazing lens but one that, I'm thinking, didnt have great sales volume.

Also I doubt there will be any jump in price for new or used. Though the lens can be Spain to find on the used market already!!

I'd like to think sigma has plans for a new, possibly faster (f2 or f1.8), version but only time will tell.

Haha, yeah didnt even notice that. A PAIN, it can be a pain to find used (not quite sure what a "Spain to find" would be!!)

FWIW
in response to a question to Sigma about the 50-150 OS HSM for Canon I found this in my inbox today.

"Good afternoon,

Yes, that is correct. This item has been discontinued. We still have the Nikon version available for sale on our website, but we are completely out of Canon and Sigma mounts.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great day!

Best regards,

That is interesting. It doesn't allude to there being a new sport replacement on the horizon or if it just didn't get the sales they had hoped for though. I seriously considered this lens, but I already had the 70-200/4 IS. My thoughts against buying the 50-150 were that I could buy a FF camera like the 6D or 5D3 and have the same performance in a lighter package. Of course that option will cost me a lot more money, but one I would like to move to over time. I think that is one inherent issue with the 50-150 is that given the price, one has to start considering the FF options too and might have hurt its sales too much. Plus it already have stiff competition in the 70-200’s out there. I do feel that the 50-150 is the best single portrait zoom option out there for crop users though.

That's exactly where I am now. The Sigma 70-200 is $1,199 right now ($200 instant rebate, at the point of purchase), only $100 more. The 50-150 would be more practical, since I use a 7D. But, that means I have to find a buyer if I go to full-frame and need to replace it. I'm thinking that that may, or may not be hard to do. And, if it is easy to find a buyer, how much of the value will the lens have maintained, since most people are looking ahead to full-frame and thinking the same thing about having to replace it. On the other hand, when or if I will move to full-frame? No idea. I think about it, then decide I'm going to do it, then decide to stay with what I have, then think about it some more. Bottom line is that I can't afford to do so at the moment, or the foreseeable future (next 6 months to a year). So, yeah... can't decide. Only $100 more for the 70-200. Tough call.

It does look like a great lens, though.

Is it better than the 55=250? Is it cheaper?

Probably not better, if you're interested in the cost.

It is considerably more expensive than the consumer-priced 55-250.

It does look like a great lens, though.

Having owned both the sigma 70-200 OS and the sigma 50-150 OS I can say that the 50-150 OS had better IQ wide open and, depending on what you shoot, is more versital on a crop camera. If you want a 70-200 then I'd suggest the tamron VC over the sigma OS

The going ff options is something I struggled with as well. FF is constantly getting less expensive but what offset it for me was the fact that sigma had two amazing crop lenses (18-35 and 50-150) so that cemented me in the crop category for the forseeable future :D

But that's just me. Go over what ff will offer you over a crop body and if te cost difference (both in bodies and lenses) is worth it to you.

Two completely different lenses in two different classes. But yes, it is better and no, it is far more expensive then the 55-250!!!!
