Does anyone actually read, or care about other poster's gear inventory?

You try to follow the relevence of a thread, and in many cases there are multiple posts by the same membes/r listing all of their "stuff" again & again; often in "large" font size, obscuring the thread response.

It strikes me as a rather annoying ,juvenile, ego, herd-mentality gesture.

If folks wish to share that info. by clicking on their profile, that's fine; but why clutter up posts with irrelevent, & distracting information.

I sometimes find it helps me understand their posts better. I don't mind them as long as the font is small.

If you think it's bad here try hanging out on a motorcycle or car forum. People list everything.

I jump over them, could not care less about those listings and certainly won't put my stuff on display either, don't see the point.

I regularly do, for a variety of reasons.

I find them helpful, especially in threads dedicated to one specific camera body. You can usually take a reasonably educated guess what lens was used to create an image if you know what the poster had at their disposal. If you don't like or don't need it skip it.

While I've gone back and forth, listing it and not, and while there is a simple link one can create and it will take you to a specific thread where the list is actually maintained, there are very good reasons for it.

If one asks for advice on a particular camera's operation, or the purchase thereof, isn't it nice to know that the person answering or providing advice owns/owned that product?

Also, and let's be blunt: We are hobbyists. We are also in large part gear collectors. I know I am. What's wrong with proudly displaying what one owns? It's all part of the hobby.

I never found a gear list of someone's to be crazy glue for my eyes. I have no problem not even looking at it if I'm not interested.

For instance, if I was interested in purchasing a Zoom H4N, I'd rather take the advice of solepatch (above) who owns one than Leigh who likes Brownies. (btw, with or without nuts?)

On another forum I frequent, the sig only shows up the first post by a person per page. So if the same person responds 3 times, you only see the sig once. I think that could help cut down some of the clutter some see.

There was a longer thread on this subject recently in another POTN subforum. People gave several reasons a gear list can be useful, including what MDJAK says above--one who owns or has used a camera/lens can advise others about it. I tried searching but didn't find the thread quickly. The OP is welcome to try a search.

That's the one I remembered. I just didn't remember where it was.
