Canon model numbers make no real sense, as you said the T3 < T3i and the T5 < T5i but the T5 is their newest camera.
The 5D xxx is not replaced by the 6D, but the 50D < 60D < 70D in secession is replacing one another. Same as the T3i, T4i, T5i. Go figure.

The numbers make sense in most of the rest of the world :p

The T3 and T5 are 1100D and 1200D respectively, the t3i-t5i are 600D-700D

The only one that doesn't quite fit in is the tiny one, the 100D.

They should have worked on a 7Dii - that would have made them serious money over the "T5"

Not really.

Fewer people are going to buy the 7DMK2, compared to a Rebel. It's why the Rebel exists. There are multiples of Rebels sold, for each 7D/7DMK2.

Very best,

Jeez, you guys have to always be serious? As the proud owner of the former "flagship" T2i, I just thought it was humorous to refer to a Rebel anything as a "flagship"! :D

Canon must have decided that 'destroyer escort Rebel' wasn't quite as marketable, so they put two flagships in their fleet.

some would argue the 50D was replaced by the 7D ;)

Very best,

Well yea they will sell more T5's i guess than a 7Dii......But I feel people would be more impressed with its release than the T5 when the T5i is out as well as the SL1 and 60D that are all fairly priced DSLR's.

I guess what I was hinting at is that more serious buyers would be impressed if they released the 7Dii with some new features / AF system / Multiple CF/SD slots over the release of the T5.......Its like when I got the T3.....then sold took it back a week later to get the T2i and was much happier. So with all the TXi's out and at close prices it just seems like a bigger SL1 kinda....I havent looked into all the specs yet tho.

Well that would be wrong, because even Canon announced that the 7D was a different branch, and manufactured both the 50D and 7D for a period of time.

Looks like it comes with the non STM version of the 18-55? Weird. 3FPS @ a buffer of 6 RAW.....

I understand their move and the target market just strange that the SL1 comes with the STM and the "new" T5 wont.

The sl1 is the Canon flagship of the micro aps-c DSLR line. :)

Ahh Canon says a lot of things. Canon said the 50D was not a replacement of the 40D and still produced them side by side for a while. But we both know that was so that people who bought the 40D a year before wouldn't be mad.

Look at the built quality and features of the 60D and 7D and tell me which one is the heir ;)

LOL. Yep ;)

Canon did that goofy name on purpose. They discontinued the T4i, so instead of the next logical T# which would be a T4, they skip it and go straight to a T5: thus ensuring the continued confusion in countries that use the T naming system

Maybe they feel they get people buying a T5i accidentally, when they wanted the T5, and make a little more money? Can someone PLEASE explain the T# matching the T#i alphanumeric line??? Is there some logical reason that makes it a good idea I'm missing?

Canon specifically stated that the xxD line was splitting. The 7D went high-end, and the 60D branched off the other way a bit (going smaller, polycarbonate build, etc).

The 7D is not the 50D replacement. It is quite obvious, given its AF points, performance, burst speeds, fps, etc. Said better, the 50D was the last of its kind, and 2 deviations occurred after it.

Not sure why this would even be brought up now? It is going on 5 years at this point, and there are 2 new generations of xxD bodies now. ???
