Thinking about taking my 5d2 or my olympus omd into canada and the Northwest Territories. I know its freezing up there and my gear isnt rated for the frost. What actually happens to a camera or lens if it freezes? anyone with experience?

The LCD will also stop working. If you have a spare battery that you can keep warm popping it in will usually get thing going again, until it gets cold as well.

I use a plastic bag with a couple of silica gel packets taped to the inside, and leave the camera in the bag just long enough to slow the transition in temperature. I've gone from 70 degrees fahrenheit to -2 and back on a regular basis, and never had a problem. Matt

waylandcool Senior Member More info | Feb 12, 2014 15:25 | #9 The only issues I've had with the cold weather is condensation on the mirror and the lens. I had my Rebel die on me with 6 year old batteries in it last winter. I've had both of my bodies outside all winter shooting dog sled demos and I've had no problems.
