Help me pick out a new lens!

I shoot ouside exclusively, mostly sports, wildlife and scenery. I have a "nifty fifty," a 24-105, a 70- 200 f4 is, 70-300 is usm and a 1.4 extender. I think that I have most of my needs met BUT I want another lens - you know how it is. Any suggestions?

17-40 and/or 100L are first two that come to mind

200-400L and 800L

Everything you have has a pretty slow aperture. So maybe look into something fast. You already have the 200mm focal length and 300mm focal length at F4 and higher. Maybe look into something telephoto with wider aperture? Or simply "go longer?"

Go longer, get the 100-400L.

Go really long, maybe the Tamron 600mm.

For what you shoot I vote go longer, maybe pick up a 2x extender too.

Can't argue with that assuming you are full frame. For a crop consider the 17-55 f2.8 and a Rokinon fisheye for some cheap fun.

An 85 1.8 or Sigma 85 1.4 would be nice for sports and portraits.

Thanks guys!! And yes, I'm shooting full frame mostly. I do have a 40D and a 17-55 that lives on it. And back when I was shooting 35mm I had an 8mm fisheye and didn't really like it and only used it a few times. I was shooting mostly dance in those days and didn't like the distortion.

That 100-400 sounds interesting - isn't there one with a buitl in extender?

Only Canon lens with a built in extender is the 200-400, and I'm just going to tell you right up front that it's out of your budget.

Have you considered a 400m f/5.6L?

I would upgrade your existing lens before thinking of some other lens...as you are pretty well covered already.

I would vote:
24mm or 35mm fast prime to be used wide open, something your current lenses cannot do.
Or the 100L as other suggested, macro is a whole other side of photography to try.
With the IS and the crop factor of your 40D will make excellent partners for macro work.

I'm tempted to recommend an UAW, a macro, or another fast lens. Something that gives you more creative ability over what you already have. This of course is going to come down to budget. "Cheap" creative fun would be the 17-40L, or the 85mm f/1.8 <--- also good for sports, but might be short for outdoors. The either 100mm macro would be great for creavitity and can be used for sports, but the AF might be lacking. On the longer end, for those across the field shots or wildlife/birds/planes/​moon, you could be looking at the Sgima 50-500mm OS, 150-500mm OS, Canon 100-400mm IS, or the new Tamron 150-600mm VC. The sample pictures of the Tamron have almost pushed me far enough to buy it, but I am waiting for more reviews, results, sample pics before I buy. I'd like to make sure there are no reported bugs that may need fixing.

i would also definitely suggest getting a fast wide angle prime lens like a 24 f1.4, 35mm f2, or Sigma's incredible 35mm f1.4 Art lens, it costs $900, a fraction of the canon 35mm L.

or conversely, since you have so many newer lenses, you can go old school and get a manual focus Carl Zeiss...
