Is anyone else surprised that Canon didn't introduce their RF wireless technology into their new ring light flash, MR-14EX II?

Not me. I'm actually thankful for that.

You're thankful there is no RF technology in addition to IR? Why is that?

Or do you mean you're happy they didn't put in RF instead of IR?

I'm happy they didn't include RF, which woulda jacked up the price, and I wouldn't have used it anyway. I can always plug the flash to my PW's and I'm lighting.

Another reason why they might not have included is because these flash units are s'posed to be on the lens, plugged to the camera, so the ability to trigger them wirelessly is pretty unimportant.

Why would you want a radio feature built into what is essentially a flash designed to be a hotshoe flash. Perhaps one day when cameras have built in RF transmitters you could move the receiever out into the ringlight, but otherwise it makes no sense.

You are missing the point.

My question isn't whether or not wireless triggering is useful or not. The existence of IR wireless, by logic, already suggests that there is a need/feature for wireless triggering. IR vs. RF is an implementation issue.

Well, had RF be included it would only have been Canon's own system. So, unless you're the proud owner of a 600EX-RT or two, you can't use it anyway. IR, on the other hand, is usable with most other speedlites and even 3rd party flashes.

It might also be possible that they're saving the RF to be included in a revamped version of their flagship unit, the MT-24EX.

There is no need to up grade the MT-24 EX. They just need to build a small flash with RT Slave capability and use a 600EX-RT or ST-E3-RT as a Master. Build a mount with accessory arms to mount the Slave flashes and you have a nice Macro flash setup. RRS (Really Right Stuff) builds some nice macro components to where all you would need would be the small Slave flashes. I am not going to hold my breath for Canon to do something so simple as this but maybe Yongnuo or other third party might see the potential market.

I'm waiting to see how the MR-14X II measures up against the Mecablitz 15 MS-1. Been eyeing the latter for quite a while. Still needs a cable, though.

I have to agree, I'm not seeing the reason to add the cost of the radio trigger to this one.

Looks more like improved details than anything revolutionary.
