So ive had my canon 6d and 50mm 1.4 since november. I am fairly new to photography so i thought the issues I am having were my fault. it turns out that I am almost sure its not me.

I am noticing very bad front focusing on all my images where the subject is at least 5 feet away from me. The issue is not noticeable closer to the subject. I have read a lot about micro adjusting, etc but do not feel comfortable doing it myself.

I did the battery at an angle test and it seems that without moving the camera and not changing anything sometimes it front focuses, sometimes back focus and sometimes its fine. Is that normal?

At this point I am just considering sending it to canon since its still under warranty.

Any success stories out there? All I seem to find are people hating the 50 1.4 saying its horrible and that they have had to send it back 3 times and canon never really resolves the issue...

thanks!

I had this issue with a 50 1.4, though I was using a T2i and 7D and not a 6D. Canon could never fix it and finally replaced the lens with a new copy which I promptly sold BNIB as soon as I received it.

That being said, I would send it in for sure. Microadjusting isn't going to do you any good if the focus varies that much depending on subject distance.

Heya,

The 6D as MFA, you should be able to adjust focusing yourself with the camera. It's not permanent. It's not uncommon for a lens to have a small issue with focus, some copies are just not great. So you just adjust it. That's the nice thing about the 6D or any camera with MFA built in, you don't have to send it to Canon (costs money) just to have it back doing the same thing still.

So just line up a test like you did. Enable the MFA and start tuning. Do it at different distances from your target. It will remember those settings for that lens specifically.

Or just get rid of the lens and get a nicer one anyways.

Very best,

how many times did you have to send it back? did you send the lens only or with the body as well?

I think it was 3 times, twice with the body. After failing to fix it the third time I got a hold of Canon's customer relations department and they swapped it with a new copy.

was the new copy bad too, or you just gave up on the lens all together? what would you recommend instead, I mainly shoot families and newborns.... was thinking a 35mm

Mine does fine, any time you are dealing with thin DoF large aperture primes focus can get tricky.

When doing your focus tests did you have it on a tripod?

Cameras: 7D2, S100
Lenses: 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, 18-135 STM, 24-70 f/4L IS USM, 50 f/1.4 USM,70-300L IS USM
