Well after much research and trying to justify spending $100+ on a ball head I ended up buying this.

So don't shoot me for getting a sub-$40 ball head as I don't use my tripod often but when I do I got sick of trying to adjust it with the 3-way.

Figured I'd post up some results later in the weekend (if they don't delay the shipping with this snow...)

Hmmm... How could you buy something for $40 when something else for $400 would work just as well?!

That line of humour would work better if you didn't have over $5K worth of gear in your sig

LOL. Well I got a ballhead for $42 a few months ago; it works pretty well and I'm impressed with it to be honest.

OP: You live due north of me. Right now you've got the perfect opportunity to make sure the head doesn't lock up in the severe cold we're having.

True...I'm not expecting anything butter smooth with cheap ball heads but time to test it out in the morning sooner or later :)

How much gear do you plan to put onto the ball head and how much precision do you need? I had a benro ball head (~40) and it is ok for my general landscape use with a 5d2 and 2470.

Just my 60D and wide angle; really for landscape is about it. If anything for product photography but that won't be carrying much weight either.

I tried this head or similar at a photo show, and it's ok, not great. feels a little clunky and only worth the asking price. My head is cheap too, but feels much better (horusbennus LX-5).

I figure really high end gear is a notch above the horusbennu in the way that the horusbennu is a notch above this fancier.... not quite ready for a $400 ballhead right now. The lx-5 is working very well for my needs (california weather, and light gear).

So far so good, the bottom panoramic rotation is really stiff; not sure if this is normal with the ballhead design but assuming it's not (but not a big deal).

At least for now it was worth the $40; just being able to adjust the camera's position quickly & easier was all that I needed.
