See...here is my thing. I want a great camera for landscapes and maybe portraiture if I ever venture into that. I want great DR and IQ. But i'm not sure where to go... This is such a pain since I'm not made of money. lol.

Then get the A7r and a Metabones adapter.

That way, you're buying a sensor, not a new camera system.

Yah...I'm really pondering that one. will the a7r sit on a traditional tripod? I have an arca swiss set up. The Sony seems so small.

You can either buy a plate for the camera itself or, as is my preference, mount the tripod plate to the metabones adapter for better weight distribution. I bought this package from Hejnar that includes a spacer block for the Metabones and an arca swiss compatible l-bracket: http://www.hejnarphotostore.com …ath=54_52&products_id=275 (external link)

What about zooms?

This set was all shot using the Sony a7r with the Canon 17-40L lens (minus the overhead view from Google ;) ).

I'd call you on this nonsense, but I really can't think of a *worse* way to spend my time.

its not about gear.

it is about photographer and what he/she can do with what they have.

check out digital rev and their cheap camera challenge. some amazing results produced with cheapest equipment with limited features and some imagination.

all one needs is a basic camera with basic features.

equipment counts only when you sell your work for a living (pro commercial work, tv and ads.).

Call me... I don't think you've got anything. I wasn't rude in any way and you responded like some kind of douche. I have a good idea where you keep your internet trophy. Same place you probably keep your head most of the time...

Nah.

When a man argues with a fool, two fools argue. We'll leave it at that. I wouldn't want to get hit while you're swinging that thing around.

While no one here would ever contend the importance of skill, the reason the "cheap camera challenge" is a challenge is because its a less than ideal circumstance to be shooting with.

The reality is, the downside of having "cheap" inadequate gear is that it often lacks the ability to capture a scene the way you see it and the way you interpret it. i.e, if you're looking at a scene with a lot of contrasty light, and camera is crushing the shadows because it lacks the dynamic range to expose all the details in the scene, your skill and your vision are literally being held back by your equipment.

If this weren't the case, then why are you here and not on a smartphone forum discussing the photos you're taking on your smartphone?

Beyond that, I don't think anyone can deny the value of a smaller camera, that can provide the same level of quality as a larger counter-part. For me, a full frame mirrorless camera is something I can reasonably bring with me all the time without having to make compromises in terms of my ability to capture a scene the way I want. And that means that I'm shooting to my full potential in situations I otherwise wouldn't be shooting at all. There is tremendous value in that, even to an amateur.
