this is an AAR type E coupler
QUOTED IMAGE

they interlock together like this
QUOTED IMAGE
IMAGE LINK: http://smg.photobucket.com …pair_zps9f00fee4.jpg.html (external link)

there is a turn bar that allows the portion on the viewers left to open up like the knuckles on your hand. when opened, it doesnt take a lot of effort for a 2nd coupler knuckle to come in and they both close and lock simultaneously...

to uncouple cars, you just lift on the bar to unlatch them and they will pull away...

also the airline has has whats called a glad-hand. when they (one on each hose) is in a straight line, there is no latching. as the weight of the hose pulls them down they 'lock' together. if a train should become uncoupled the hoses straighten out (from the weight of the cars pulling apart) and the hoses straighten out, they come disconnected and the brakes lose their air pressure. the brakes are set without air pressure and are held un-set or off by air pressure provided from the locomotive...

i dont know how the UK couplers work other than i think they are just big iron links from a chain that are pinned together somehow...

The UK does use these type couplers except the air break lines do not auto couple that has to be done manually, the failing of the above couplers they can come apart in a high speed derailment allowing on carriage to ride over another hence most modern trains in the UK have fixed coupling between each coach, multiple units have auto couplers between units

I went to visit a friend in Switzerland and took a two hour train back to the airport. This pic includes part of the train so it fits this thread, the whole route was one big postcard :)

Here I give you views from a railroad that no longer exists except in scales other than 1:1.

LOL!

Yes after the "takeover/merger" most all of the newer locomotives were rebranded. The real change though is not just the little logo'ing change but the color change from fire engine red to burnt orange. The fact that ATSF had over 200 brand new locomotives on hand AND another 400 scheduled for delivery made the railroad even more of a prime nugget for a corporate takeover!

The paint scheme change caught the EMD factory by surprise and they just allowed a few to escape without a final coat of paint simply because they were not ready for the color change and hence the solid primered versions got out.

Matter of fact the only ATSF loco that I KNOW was completely erased from the system was...

666.

I had that locomotive as the lead locomotive on two trains I ran.

I think I've posted the story before.
