Thanks Frank. Feather River canyon is one of my favorite areas to chase trains. I just wish it was closer to where I live!

Thanks for answering and clearing up the mystery.

I have a very informative video of a beet sugar-mill; I would also like to find a video of a genuine cane sugar-mill in operation.

Regarding the picture of the derail switch above, there is also a clamp-on derail that can be clamped onto any rail anywhere and locked in place.

It accomplishes the same thing without all the picturesque drama, so not nearly so neat a device.

Such derails are most often seen where one roads property ends and another begins, yet through traffic is rare; there will be derails facing both directions to prevent errant traffic of one road from inadvertently and unexpectedly entering the other roads trackage.

Use of a derail prevents the track being severed and allows controlled transfer of traffic when necessary.

RailfanTerry, both are good, but that top shot is a real winner; impressive capture.

It is nice to see steam handling a train by itself; UP and many others ruin the atmosphere by splicing in a couple diesels immediately behind the tender.

I did not know NS was running their steam engines; the last word I had was that they had parked them forever.
