Nice!

Isn't the Baily Yard in North Platte now the largest railroad yard in the world?

I live in Elkhart, Indiana. My father was a railroader from about 1935 with New York Central until he retired in 1975 with Penn-Central.
When I was a kid in the 60's dad used to take me to the yard in Elkhart which at that time was the largest yard in the world.

Thank you Bill.

I looked up North Platte with Google Earth and the rail yard was so easy to find :-)

I 'assume' you are also a railroader since the pictures you took were inside the yard. I wish I could drive inside the Elkhart yard to take pictures, but I am not allowed in as it is private property, which I fully understand.

No I'm just a railfan. Anyone can go up in the Golden Spike Tower and view the yard. I think it's 7.00 admission fee. You can go to the 8th floor and see through glass or 7th floor and be in the open and not have to shoot through glass.

Oh how neat! I have always wished there were viewing towers in Elkhart, but alas there are none. When they built the yard in the 50's (or whenever) they apparently did not think there would be an interest in the public viewing the yard.

There was a little chaos around here yesterday. A 12,000' train broke down 25 kms after leaving the yard. In all it took a few hours to get the train moved to the siding where they could drop the broken boxcar, reconnect the train, sort out additional brake problems, figure out how to maneuver all the trains around each other, and get on their way. I took some pictures of the damage and repairs.

Thank you! Very interesting pictures. I would really have enjoyed being able to see the action if that happened near my home.

I am going to show my ignorance here... what is a " 12,000' " train?
