Yes I did grow up around trains!! :-) ;-)a

Were your grandpa and dad both railroaders? My dad was a freight conductor when he retired, starting on the New York Central then retiring from Penn-Central.

As a kid I was in the yard several times before my dad retired from my early child hood to my early twenties.

Here is a shot I took of the yard from the tower at the 'hump'

Here is a shot of my dad on his last run when he retired taken by a fellow crew member on my dad's camera.

I should have added, my father retired in 1975, and as you can see he worked in cabooses! Boy do I miss them......

I have a few of my dad's railroad items.

No. They both just like trains! Im not sure to be honest if my grandpa ever worked the railroad or not. He worked at a trucking company when i was a kid

A couple recent shots around Milwaukee:

Union Pacific's "Marsh Job" works back to load covered hoppers at Cargill Salt on Jones Island as the 1000-footer Burns Harbor is moored in the harbor for winter layup.

While the east coast was trying not to freeze to death today, I was actually wishing for shade while waiting for this train to come by as it was in the mid 70's out here.

I find myself constantly trying to find the ideal place to photograph trains. It just doesn't exist around here. There are places I've found where I can shot them safely without the whole "trespassing" thing, but the background composition is severely lacking.

I totally agree with you there. I have also found it very lacking.

That does make it tough. I actually have to drive up to an hour or so away to get to some of my favorite spots, but I am lucky to have a bunch of places locally that I can also hit after work.

So warm the orchards are starting to blossom in the central valley. This northbound was holding on a siding.

Certainly not a "best" train shot - but an odd one nonetheless. I was leaving from a meeting in Richvale California (Northern Sacramento Valley) and saw this coming down the tracks. One of the more unconventional train "engines" I've ever seen.

Not having my gear with me - I snapped these my my phone (while parked on the side of the road).
