The poles are there to hold up the fence/netting that keeps falling rocks off the tracks. No real getting around them, as they pretty much line the route of the canyon.

Nothing to see in Iowa, at least I found a bridge over tracks leading to a rail yard. Sadly no good place to stand on the side of the bridge actually facing the yard. Didn't feel like standing in traffic was the best idea. This side there was a sidewalk. At least I got something!

This was in Mason City, for anyone who wants reference?
