I wondered about the same thing. The train was stopped in the middle of town and the crew members were talking to the local fire department. They apparently decided that it was wise to shut the engine down, which they did. The fire ceased immediately. I came back by about an hour later and the train was gone. They must have "pushed" the lead engine on to Atlanta. Can they even do that?

Why not? Throw it in neutral, Hook up and treat it like any other car.

I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather.
Not screaming, terrified, like his passengers.

I don't normally do train photography, but I have certainly enjoyed all the great photo the members have posted. I decided to post my one and only train shot. It's not a great photograph, but is documents a very unusual event. I happened upon this in downtown Easley, SC. The train had stopped behind me and I heard a strange pulsating sound and this is what I saw. Not at all sure what was the cause of the fire, but I guess it had something to do with a fuel injector line. It stopped immediately after they shut down the engine.
Thanks for looking. Larry

That's a turbo fire. Happens occasionally.

Cool picture, but I sure hope the engine was only sitting there!!! ;-)a

Yeah, it's one of the Alaska State Fair trains that the Alaska Railroad operates between Anchorage and Palmer when the fair is operating. We're guests of the railroad and its wonderful employees, so all rules and safety precautions are followed, the train was properly secured and waiting for passengers to board. :-)

Boy howdy, speaking from experience, I can say that most every working crew operating a train absolutely hates this photograph. What I mean is that they hate to see someone "taking" a shot like this. As a photographer (amateur of course) I get it, but as an engineer I hate it. No matter how good the shot is, and this is a good one, it is still one of the least favorites of mine. Hope you were a good distance down the tracks and using a "long" lens!!

The EXIF says he used a Canon 24-105 at 105, not really what I would call a "long" lens.

I appreciate the concern, but the train was not moving, it was on the siding waiting for the opposite direction traffic. I didn't stop to take the picture, I just pointed my camera out the window of the car as I drove over the tracks at the grade crossing and let fly with hi speed continuous. I would never stop or stand on the tracks in front of a moving or even idling train, trust me. ;-)a

Now see, there you go, knowing the full story makes such a huge difference! LOL!! (At myself!) I should have known better, and considering the many fine photographs you take and post, my assumption fits the cliche' to a tee!

It's all good. I spent 21 years in the Air Force around spinning props that could chop you into pieces and jets that could suck you in from 20 feet, so I have a very healthy respect for machinery of any kind:-)

I see so many people doing incredibly stupid things around the tracks it makes me cringe. When I am not shooting from my car, I need a wheelchair, so I keep myself very well out of harms way, which is why I have nice big zooms!
