Jul 11, 2018 21:23 | #4520 Hillbille wrote in post #18654964 Heading east out of Flagstaff passing the Purina chow plant. BNSF crews say that when the smell of that plant begins to smell "good" it's time to retire! LOL!! This is a VERY good photograph of this particular location. Why? Because it essentially captures the optical illusion presented by the landscape. That train is in dynamic braking, because it is gaining speed and must be held back against the steep down grade! It does not appear as that though, it appears as though the train is going UPhill, it is NOT. Not really sure, but there were stories of cars being set out of trains at Purina the were cut off and left frestanding on the mainline while the crew put the rest of the cars back on their train. When they cut their engines off to go get the car - it was gone. I heard of this happening at least twice over the years. The cars rolled away EAST and went downhill at terrific speeds! The crews were fooled by the optical illusion thinking that a car would not roll uphill - east. But it isn't uphill and a car WILL roll east from there. Newly hired brakemen are hard to convince until they actually SEE it happen. LOL! The grade is steep enough that when the hand brake is released on a car it will slowly begin to roll east - the direction this train is going, and if not caught quickly enough it will become very hard to stop! Nice photo! Had to move my post to "quote" this photo, otherwise my comment would not make much sense, especially following a post from the UK! LOL! ߘ°ߘ Thank you
