Great image and scenery John, well done. Is this somewhere on the Settle to Carlisle line?

Thanks. Yes it's taken at Arten Gill viaduct.

John,

I am "assuming" this is somewhere close to where you live as you have taken shots here before.

What a great place this is to take pictures of steam trains! And you either have plenty of steam trains, or the same train makes lots of runs.

I am jealous!!! ;-)a

Thanks mate.
The photo is taken on the Settle and Carlisle line which consists of twenty-three viaducts and is reputedly the most scenic railway journey in Britain.
Arten Gill is about 70 miles from where I live.

Here is a train shot from WWII. My father was in the 782nd Tank Battalion and arrived in France in January 1945. They boarded this train which was overloaded and operated by someone who wasn't as familiar with it as the former crew.
If started out quite slowly and gathered speed only when encountering the down hill run into the station. The brakes were inadequate when the train got to the end of the track leading right to the station. Soldiers who were sitting in the cars with their legs dangling out the doors had them amputated when the doors slammed shut. Quite a few lost their lives that day at St Valerie. You can search for and find an article or two about the incident if you wish.
My father was unhurt and finished the war in Czechoslovakia.

How tragic this story is.... but this kind of accident happened many times in the early years of the railroad, learning how to stay safe.

These old trains and the infrastructure still in use today are amazing.
The engineering that has stood the test of time is exceptional.
Coming from a background of bridge setout and construction (modern) I boggle at what has been achieved.
Great British Railway Journeys is a TV program I enjoy and I'm sure many of the photos here I've seen them on TV.

I appreciate these posts thanks.

I have an old book about our local history. In it is a story about one of my relatives who was the engineer on a logging railroad, circa 1880. He complained that the boiler was creaking and groaning and he did not want to operate it anymore. The company owner told him that he would have to find someone else to replace him as the new locomotive would not be arriving for another week. Reluctantly, he agreed to stay on, but it was a fatal mistake. On the next run the engine blew up, killing the fireman almost instantly, but my ancestor survived another day in extreme pain from the scalding burns.

How sad for your relative.....

Thank you for this story.

They just opened a new segment of trail in my town along the bay, so I have some new perspectives to try out.
