If you're in the Southwestern US and want to photograph this locomotive, it's on tour right now. I posted info at

Pic from the 'net:

TY, danger; a friend and I may try to get some pics...WEDNESDAY, we're going Wednesday. We'll start in Mohawk and the I-8 rest area, then eastward to Gila Bend, then continue following it eastward on Old US80 and then AZ 238 into Maricopa where we'll turn north on N. John Wayne Parkway/AZ 347 and come home to Phoenix.

We're still looking for an amateur-but-enthusiastic videographer.

Olympus E-M1-3 and Oly PROs in 40-150/2.8 plus 2X plus FourThirds 12-60/2.8-4 SWD.. Gitzo GT-3533S Systematic tripod with leveler and Rogeti geared head.. Coming is a new Canon R5 system with four lenses.

I believe there were only 25 of those made, only 8 still exists and that one is the only one that actually runs.

yes its an articulated 4-8-8-4 built by Alco (American Locomotive Company) 1941- 1944. they served until 1959.

the Chesapeake and Ohio Alleghenies were more powerful but slightly smaller (see my image of one in this thread)

132' long, 1.2 million pounds. the articulation is in the sub-frame of the drive wheels allowing it to traverse curves. 6,290 hp (the Alleghenies had around 7,400-ish) $265,000 in 1941, $4,513,993 in 2018 dollars.. (wikipedia)

My grandpa was a rail engineer for 57 years. Drove the steamers up until they were phased out in the early 50s or so. He drove the Allegheny along the Ohio river into West Virginia. That engine now sits in the Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. He always said he hated when they phased out the steamers, even though the working conditions on the diesels were much better. But, of course, he would never admit that.

He's on the right along with his fireman.
