It's based on the Russian paranoia (justified, perhaps) of a land invasion. They wanted to make sure that, if nothing else, the enemy's logistics would be hampered by them not selecting standard gauge for their railways.

Hmm, interesting. I heard about the invasion theory in a documentary, so now I'm not sure whom to believe. I guess I'll have to dig into it some more.

First of all, as you said, it is a theory. Secondly, just because it’s in a documentary doesn’t make it any more true than because it was on the internet. Haven’t you ever seen a documentary of big foot, aliens building the pyramids, the Loch Ness Monster or other things of at least debatable truth?

Yeah, I was pretty surprised too. It didn't seem to be excessively difficult either.

It must be pretty well balanced, and I'm sure the position of the locomotive helps too.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.
