Thats a beautiful shot Lenny! Where is this? Would love to see anymore you have on this.

Thanks! This bridge is Martinez California and known as the Muir Trestle as it is near the John Muir National Historic Site, or alternatively as the Alhambra trestle, as it crosses Alhambra Creek, Alhambra Valley, and Alhambra Avenue, but to the BNSF it is just, "Bridge 1170.7", denoting the milepost location where it sits at on their Stockton Subdivision. It was originally a wooden trestle built in 1900 and then replaced with the steel bridge that still stands today in 1929. It is 1,680 feet long and 75 feet high. This shot may be a re-post, I am not sure as I took it in 2013, but here is what it looks like Alhambra Avenue on the south side.

A couple shots from yesterdays summer solstice trip in Cajon Pass. It was still light enough to try catching a shot of the Chicago bound Southwest Chief.

The Los Angeles bound Southwest Chief was running late.

Thanks Lenny, really appreciate the story and history of it. Went back and looked at that picture again visualising the story with it.

Interesting collection of engineering structures.
The bridge at left is an example of cost versus aesthetic.
I worked on one such bridge and they took the aesthetic route over cost.
The deck of the rail crossing diagonally over the top of other in your photo is rectangular. Easy and cost effective to design construct.
Had they just built a bridge to accommodate the overhead line(s) the width of that deck would be narrow and parallel to upper rails, but would require massive edge beams of considerable length, but only short cross beams and narrow deck.
Those long edge beams are engineered to suit and expensive to build.
But the bridge looks so much nicer.
That one looks like a mistake at worst, or a road bridge with approaches removed and a rail built across it diagonally.

This forum never ceases to amaze me, the depth of knowledge and expertise outside of photography. I gathered so much interesting fact and knowledge from your post, its so fascinating. :-)
