In the photos on the link it looks like there are 2 windows above the nose almost like a jet plane's (I'm using my phone to look at it, perhaps on a larger screen it may look different) Do you know if it is just streamlined lights? I cannot imagine somebody crauling across the lenght of the boiler to look out from there?

Not sure, but suspect air vent?

I am seeing the track does not appear to be straight, but I was thinking the shot was taken with an extremely wide angle lens which does distort the photo quite a bit.

Is the curve "look" of the track why you said you thought it was a tight turn?

You're quite correct a 10-17mm fisheye (at it's widest) on APSC, apparently it gives an 180° diagonal FOV on this setting.
IIRC I was 1-2ft from the wheels.
