I had to go East of town to get away from the the crowd where the train stopped
for about a half-three-quarters of an hour.

I used Google maps to locate a good place as it came through Oklahoma. Google maps do not resemble the world from human eye level. Sad thing is I drove by the perfect place on the way to the place I picked out.

A couple photos from a day in Cajon Pass, April 24, 2021

BNSF train heading up the pass as a UP train heads down on the Palmdale cut-off.

My last train was this FedEx trailer train passing through Silverwood on its way down the pass.

Nice colors, well composed, the fine detail works beautifully. Definitely wallhangers. To my eye, though, if I'm allowed to complain, I'd say that the thick black lines around them, especially on the first one, are a bit too strong.

I gather some set a border for Flickr and that's why the black is predominant.
Maybe the reason here?
Looks okay on Flickr.

Looks okay on Flickr.

This is a shot from my Flickr account. This is an overhead shot (Google Earth) of the yards in Elkhart, IN built I believe in 1953. At the time it was built it was the largest rail raid in the world. The red arrow on the right side shows the location of the "Hump" where cars will be slowly pushed to go into the yard, sometime one at a time, sometimes two or three at a time to "make up" new trains.

There is a 9 minute youtube video (external link) some one took of the yard in Elkhart showing the size of the yard, and a single car rolling down the rails to a new rail, new train. This was all computer controlled even when when it was built.

There are 72 tracks in this yard. My father used to work with New York Central retiring from Penn-Central after over 40 years. He used to take me to the yard with him, mostly back in the mid 60's to late 70's when he retired. He did not work IN the yards, he rode mostly freight trains to the Chicago area as "Conductor" or boss of the train. I have some of his rail equipment.

Why some of these other shots from Flickr have the large border I do not know.

I started adding borders about 10 years ago, but I don't remember the exact reason. I think it was influenced by one of my friends who put borders on his images. I liked the look. It's not something that everyone likes. Thanks for the good comments.
