When UP's 4014 came through here, I was talking to a fellow who had been a train dispatcher in Tucson.
He said that the contact area of the wheel on the track is only about the size of a US Quarter.
That's not a lot of area to create the friction the wheel needs to start or stop.

Very interesting information, and about the amount of area I would have expected to hear it was given the area on the wheel is pretty straight but on and angle, and the area on the track is radial.

Nevada Southern engine 844 was decorated for the holidays in Boulder City, Nevada. This engine has remained in the colors of the Union Pacific railroad since it was donated to the museum.
