Still a few Autumn colours around as another steam excursion heads for the Yorvik Xmas Market, this time it's ex GWR No.7029 "Clun Castle" on a cold misty morning.

Another shot from Garforth station as I clearly have nothing better to do on Saturday nights! lol

This is a restored and refitted HST (high speed train) run as a Pullman service, this particular excursion was running from Peterborough to Edinburgh and back, "The Edinburgh Xmas Pullman".

Incidentally the footbridge is a Grade II listed building, Circa 1900.

Yeah, the tracks are on a tree covered man made hill, about 15 feet above ground level. This is right next to the tent church I posted in another thread. I heard the train coming but didn’t have time to climb the hill for a better photo.

The trains usually come through during the church service, this time it was early.

In this screen shot from Google maps you can see the tent in the shade of a tree on the left and the tracks on the right.

Looks like many train companies are involved from the mix of locomotives.

I have never understood the mix of locomotives if there is any meaning to them or is that what was available at the making of the trains.....

since about the 70s, maybe earlier with mergers, take overs and other alliances, almost all rolling stock (cars) and motive power (locomotives) are shared or leased by a lot of the companies. some of the reasons is that for a Class 1 railroad (the big ones, Burlington Northern Santa Fe/BNSF, Union Pacific/UP, Canadian National/CN, Norfolk Southern/NS and Canadian Pacific/CP) will have a series of locomotives that they have taken out of service for one reason or another so they will lease power from another railroad for a while. sometimes these locomotives that you see in mixed combinations are dead in tow or shut down and not providing additional pulling power. they might be broken down or maybe lets say NS has a couple of locomotives that are out of their normal locale and theyre just being moved back to 'regular' NS territory.

if you were to google the different railroads you would see the huge number of former Class 1s that are now called Fallen Flags. CN technically 'owned' Central Vermont, Grand Trunk Western, Grand Trunk Railroad, Wisconsin Central (among probably close to 100 other smaller railroads) but have since consolidated them under the CN name. they also bought out Illinois Central which had merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad (their locomotive can be seen in the end act of "In the heat of the night" with Rod Staiger and Sidney Poitier when Sidney's character is headed back to Chicago)

well some of these many locomotives STILL havent been repainted in the Top Five companies colors. like the many many pieces of rolling stock that sports huge murals and lots of tagging, the reason being, "Paint dont haul Freight". its no longer cost effective to paint a locomotive (or boxcar/tankcar/gondola) if everything else works as designed. more money to the stock holders right?

things have changed so drastically in the railroad industry that im surprised it hasnt imploded already. trains used to have 5 or 6 crew members. Engineer, Fireman (fed the coal on steam engines) head end brakeman, conductor, rear end brakeman and sometimes an extra. Firemen were held over with the introduction of diesel electrics until there were no more of them employed. they were never replaced as men retired. the Brakemen were eventually let go on any of the long haul trains and SOME still exist on locals or smaller railroads. with only an Engineer and a Conductor and the advent of the Flashing Rear End Device (FRED) which is a telemetry box on the last car with a flashing red light that relays brakepipe pressure to the engine, there was no need for a caboose... the Conductor does the work of the Brakeman and in some countries they have eliminated the Conductor all together. the companies are pushing for the same here. at least on the long-haul trains. locals will probably still keep a Conductor on for sometime until they get all of the locomotives converted over to RCO (remote control operations) and then the Engineer will be out on the rails, uncoupling and coupling cars that need to be set out or picked up from local industry. they have RCOs in a lot of the yards anymore because its 'more efficient'.

the big hullabaloo in the news about the Railroad contracts are for another post in another forum or you can PM me and ask MY thoughts on this.

i am NOT a railroad man
my FAMILY has 125+yrs in the railroad industry

I also thank you Dave for your thoughts here. You may have read on here that I have said my Father was a railroader starting with The New York Central Company in I believe 1935 retiring from Penn Central in 1975. I have several of his railroad keys, and a Passenger Train Uniform with NYC buttons as well as P-C buttons. I also have 2 Railroad Hats that go with the uniform. I never saw him wear the uniform. After I was born he was riding a caboose and his title was always Conductor of the freight train.

My brother and I got to ride the caboose with dad one time for what he thought was going to be a short run which turned into all night long. We were in high school at the time. There was one time the engine started running from a full stop and knocked the air right out of me!! That was a thrill!!
