Finally hiked up to it this past Saturday. This tunnel has been in continuous use since it opened in 1853. I'm standing on a bridge that was part of the now abandoned "Mountain Goat" branch line. It was awesome feeling the ground shake as Q582 labored through the tunnel, then emerged and went directly under me. Cowan Q582 Here I'm standing about 1/3 of the way up the grade to the tunnel by "first curve" watching a double stack tackle the 2% grade. Way down at the bottom is a mixed freight waiting for his turn at the mountain. Union Pacific drug out the Western Pacific "heritage" inspired locomotive for an Operation Lifesaver special. Three cars of UP's varnish went on a short jaunt to Soledad, and back to Watsonville Junction, California. Here's the short special passing through Elkhorn Slough yesterday morning.

The depot was built in 1887 and is now a CSX field office. When you shoot a train coming towards you do you shoot manual or some other setting with +or- adjustment.I have noticed the headlight fools the meter when using av or tv setting. If shooting manual what do you meter off of before the trains arrival. I have tried spot metering off the ballast and usually get pretty close to a good exposure. Just seeing what others due
