If shooting manual what do you meter off of before the trains arrival. I have tried spot metering off the ballast and usually get pretty close to a good exposure. Just seeing what others due Your best bet is using the ballast as it's a pretty good source of 18% grey and as we all learned in Photography 101, your hand can be used if you have nothing else.
