Exactly the position I am in. - My two are the 24-105 and a 100-400. They cover just about all of my needs. The 24-105 "lives" on the camera and the 100-400 "lives" in my day pack just in case it is needed for wildlife pics.

24-400 with 2 lenses and no gaps. Pretty awesome alright.

Yup. On FF, that would be the way to go. On a crop, 24 wouldn't be very wide for your widest lens.

Heck, go for three: 24-105, 70-200 f4 (2.8 if you can afford it) and 50 1.8. If you eventually find out that 200 ain't long enuf, maybe by then you can afford an extender. That's why I mention the 2.8, it'll work better with a 2x extender.

Yeah mate, I've got the 70-200 2.8, now I need the wide end. the 50 1.8 is in the family so I can borrow it whenever I need too

24 70 canon 2.8 ii and 70-200 canon 2.8 ii, everything is a compromise, my wallet can not however afford this compromise.

24-70 2.8II and 70-200 2.8II IS.

the flying moose has the world at his fingertips. These are my two lenses also, but I have the older 24-70, heavier, but still high IQ. These lenses leave out macro and astronomy, but they sure fill the bill for everything in between. Oh, and for fisheye, get a GoPro, lots cheaper than a lens.

The 24-70 would work for astro, especially on FF. Your two wouldn't go nearly long enough for my uses, though; I'd be stacking 2x + 1.4x on the 200...

Update. I started this thread in an effort for people to help me buy a second lens and I think it has worked, I managed to pick up a used 24-105 with a UBxxxx date code an a Hoya UV filter for $850 NZ ($710us) delivered

So my 2 lenses will be 24-105 and 70-200 f2.8 mk2. YAY!
