Does anyone have any tips about using an external flash when taking a group picture of people in a hockey arena? I'm currently using a Canon 430x flash. I feel like I over exposed the picture but corrected it in LR.

The camera with its ETTL will then set the exposure as if the flash was on the cameras hot shoe.
