I have the chance to buy a Nikon D3100 with 18-55 lens for $75. Seller says that everything works but it won't take a picture. Is it worth it?

If it won't take a picture then clearly everything does not work. It depends on what wrong with it and how much it would cost to fix. New they can be had for about $400. It could be a cheap fix and you got a good deal or it could be not worth it to fix and you are out $75. Your call.

Isn't that a little like saying: "This used car is in perfect condition. It just doesn't run."?

So what are you going to do with it? A camera that does not take a picture is just a fancy paperweight.

That's like saying I bought a new stove, it does everything but cook my food or I bought a new tv, it does everything but show a picture on the screen.

So..just what is this "everything" that it does, and how would you benefit from it?

Seriously, you guys are thinking waaaayyyy too deep about this. You can control the settings, view the screen, zoom the lens. The ONLY thing you can't do is press the shiny button and snap a picture. It really wasn't that hard of a question was it?

No, it was trivial question with a simple answer. Which part did you not understand?

Are you planning on fixing it? Or just using it for video...? I don't get it. $75 sounds like it'd be worth the gamble if you're going to try to fix it, the lens has to be worth about that.

Given your replies, just go for it, what's the worst that can happen? You spend the money, and you have a toy that looks like a real camera, but does nothing. Sounds like you already made up your mind.

This seems like some kind of philosophical question. What do you call a camera that will not take a picture? Me, I call it 'broken' but the OP calls it 'everything works'.

If a 'everything works' camera will not take a picture, is it still really a camera? If a broken camera falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? What is the sound of one broken camera clapping?

As for purchasing advice, it's tough to give good suggestions without knowing what the OP plans to do with this 'everything works' camera. If you just want to hold down papers then a rock is going to be cheaper. If you just plan to bang in nails with it, a hammer will likely turn out to be cheaper, more efficient and more durable. If you want to take pictures with it.....well, it's broken.
