Isn't that the point of a camera?

Yes. Thank you for chiming in with your undeniable knowledge of cameras.

Yes...apparently he has much more knowledge than you, as to why one would buy a camera.

How desperate is your need for a paperweight? If there is a failure in the camera you have to consider possible repair costs. A $75 camera that costs $600 to repair is less of a bargain than a $300 camera.

Have you tried the camera? If so, what happens when you push the shutter button? Do you get an error code or just nothing at all? As someone else said, it could be just the shutter button (although I wouldn't buy the camera betting on that being true).

FYI... the cheapest Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm F3.5-5.6G ED II lens that I could find on ebay in the "Buy it Now" category (i.e. not up for bid) is $75, so you aren't taking much of a risk if the lens is in excellent condition.

Might want to check your attitude at the door... You came into this forum new to DSLRs and then asked a question about a broken camera (Nikon) and whether it was worth buying or not. It doesn't matter if it was a Nikon, Olympus, etc. The answer would be the same. You either buy a paperweight that is useless and isn't worth repairing, or you might figure out the problem yourself and got a deal. It's a gamble only you can answer, not us. The attitude and infantile replies aren't going to help your cause. A camera exists for one purpose, to take pictures. The one you are asking about is broken if it cannot do the one thing it is designed to do, period.

Buy it, keep the lens, sell the body for parts and find another body. This way you get a lens for free. Simplest way to go about this.

Look back at his past posts. His attitude is evident there as well.

To the OP:
there is a saying that goes roughly like this.

if you met a jerk* in the morning, you met a jerk in the morning.
if you keep meeting jerks all day long, then, you my friend are the jerk.

* you can replace that innocuous word with something a bit more potent if you'd like.

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Like I said, no trolling on my part. I just think it's funny that some of you can't answer a question without getting all bent out of shape. There is no reason for replies other than those pertaining to what I asked. You reply with something other than an answer to original question then you open yourself up to get called out on it. I have no problem electronically standing up to internet gangsters. I will explain this one more time in hopes it will make a little more sense this time. Apparently, some didn't understand the question the first time.

Everything on the camera works except when you try and take a picture. This means everything on the camera works except when you try and take a picture. You can switch settings, look through the viewfinder, see the lcd screen, charge the battery, view pictures on sd card that is inserted in camera, pop up the flash, etc. When you press down the button to take a picture, nothing. I am ASSUMING there may be a bad contact? bad board? something broke? I don't know. i haven't physically tried it. I asked if it would auto focus and waiting on answer. It comes with kit lens and they say the camera and lens in perfect condition. I was wanting to know if it would cost more to send it in and have them look at it/fix it than it would be worth. Yes, this is a Canon forum, but if you get upset about me asking about a Nikon then you might want to remove the Nikon camera thread. Correct?

Nobody got bent out of shape until you took the attitude you did, all of 3 replies in, then continued to belittle everyone. Everyone answered your exact questions listed. Nobody knows what the issue is, it could be a number of things.

Facts:

  • The camera is useless as is. A camera that takes no pictures is a toy for a kid to play with.
  • Nobody knows what the issue might be.
  • Nobody can tell you how much it will cost to fix.
  • You will spend money just to send it in and get an assessment,so that will add to your overall cost.
  • The price seems reasonable just to get the lens.
  • It is your risk, and you have to decide if it is worth it, nobody here can answer that for you.

OP, the confusion stemmed from the fact that you did not actually ask us what we thought might be wrong with the camera or if we thought the camera might be repairable. You gave a conflicting statement on the condition and asked if you should buy it.

That's why people were confused, and blaming everyone for an inability to read your mind isn't helping. If you wanted to know if the thing can be fixed, then that's what you should have asked. When 20 find your question to be confusing, it's probably because it is confusing.
