I like how you can record 4 channels independently. But for me I don't see a huge gain over my DR-40 unless the recording quality is higher which I doubt considering these are all really budget recorders compared to the pro stuff anyway.

Ergonomics for single-person audio+video recording. Headphone out, line out, and (from recorder to camera) camera out. Slate button for helping with synch in post. There are other useful features, but ones I listed are in quick contrast to the Tascam DR-40.

Different applications really. This is for mounting to the camera and possibly a mic mounted on/near camera. I can see the ergonomics due to knobs but the DR-40 has built in mics and I use it for when I video from back of audience and record audio by stage...

The Tascam DR-60D is not limited to single-person shows. The Tascam DR-60D also allows for the easy use of a neck-strap (attached to the "handles"), easy attachment of cables while hanging from a neck (with no cable strain), and easy changing of batteries while mounted to a tripod or shoulder rig. An operator can run cabled and wireless microphones.

For someone who has neither, the Tascam DR-60D is likely more useful (and, at the moment, more device for the money) than the Tascam DR-40, unless the person absolutely needs the built in microphones of the Tascam DR-40. The Tascam DR-60D is usually much more expensive than the Tascam DR-40, but at this moment, B&H is selling the Tascam DR-60D for only $25 more than the Tascam DR-40, AND including a free copy of PluralEyes 3 (normally $179 for the software).

I received a PM asking about microphone choices for the Tascam DR-60D.

The Tascam DR-60D, like some other portable recorders, has XLR microphone inputs and will supply "phantom power" to condenser microphones that need it. Some condenser microphones are powered by a battery instead of or in addition to phantom power. One can damage microphones and the unit through the misuse of phantom power, so one should read the manuals! Having included the warning, chances are that one will want to use XLR connections.

There are many different microphones. Like lenses, some have wide angles of pickup, some have extremely narrow angles of pickup, some are in between. Shotgun microphones, misnamed because of their appearance, actually are quite directional, but can still pick up sounds that coming from off-axis. Ric Viers has written two books, http://www.amazon.com …sr=8-2&keywords=ric+viers and http://www.amazon.com …31201/ref=pd_bx​gy_b_img_y each containing information on microphone selection and use. I suggest reading through at least one of them to learn the basics of microphones, and highly encourage The-Sound-Effects-Bible to anyone with an interest in sound effects and/or effectively using a microphone to record a very wide array of subjects.

I know from your thread https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php​?t=1347173 that you already have the PluralEyes 3 software, so it is less of a deal for you. Any XLR microphones you might purchase for the Tascam DR-60D would also work with your Tascam DR-40, which might be an incentive to (1) get the Tascam DR-60D, (2) replace your Tascam DR-40 with the Tascam DR-60D, or (3) simply keep your Tascam DR-40. The right external microphone placed in the right location will be a great improvement over the internal mics of the Tascam DR-40, which are decent low cost mics designed to capture something in most situations, without much user knowledge or effort, but also they suffer because are designed to capture all that they can. The Rode NTG-1 shotgun mic is a decent budget shotgun mic that needs the phantom power the Tascam DR-60D and Tascam DR-40 can both provide: http://www.adorama.com​/RDNTG1.html The Rode NTG-2 can also be powered by a battery, is a bit longer than the NTG-1, but has a bit more sel-niose than the NTG-1, and is a bit more expensive: http://www.adorama.com​/RDNTG2.html $250 and $270, respectively, are the usual prices for the Rode NTG-1 and NTG-2. Occasionally they can be found a bit cheaper, but the prices do not fluctuate much or often.

Wouldn't a pair of NGT-1's work great for a stereo setup. My only issue is...
