I apologize for yet another Yongnuo question, but I've been asked to advise a friend on getting gear for his daughter. I have camera and Canon flashes and am not very familiar with Yongnuo, except they seem to be highly thought of here. And searches turn up mostly questions about triggers and manual flashes for some reason.

What Yongnuo flash would you recommend my friend get his daughter to use with the Digital Rebel SL1? I want it to work with the Canon flash metering system in the SL1.

I know all about Strobist.com and I would probably just go manual for my future purposes, but you can also use automatic flashes in manual mode. So to short-circuit a lot of wasted bandwidth, PLEASE don't post about how she's better off just using manual. Please. Just don't. I want her to decide to go that way herself and therefore I INSIST on a flash that will work with the Canon in auto modes. Period. End of discussion. Well that discussion. :D

So which Yongnuo model should I recommend to go with the SL1? Thanks for the help. Not being in the market for a flash myself and YN making so many different models, and it being an after-market unit, I'm terrified of steering him the wrong way.

She's a 7th grader, by the way, and pretty much a beginner, but loves taking photos and wants to join a photo club. I chose the SL1 due to features/price. If I recommend a Canon branded flash to my buddy, his head would explode. :D Thanks.

By The Way ...

The SL1 does not support wireless flash, so no worries about that. Thanks again.

Edit: Looks like the Yongnuo YN-565 EX is the old 580 EX "equivalent" (no radio)?

I'm not a user, but the Yn 568ExII looks much closer to the Canon 580Ex series.
Master capable & HSS too. No ext pack compatibility.

But please verify . . . !

Thanks! I think the "II" at the end refers to radio work, which means the SL1 won't take advantage of it. That would be like the 580 EX-II.

I do think the YN-565 EX is the old 580 EX "equivalent". I don't think the SL1 needs any "II", Canon or otherwise. But there are a lot of experts here who will confirm, I'm sure. I'm pretty sure that's what I want, I just don't want to steer the guy wrong.

As far as I know, the "II" just indicates the second generation/version of each flash.

I'm not familiar with the SL1, but what I use (with great satisfaction) with my 6D and Rebels are the Yongnuo YN-565 EX and YN-560 EX II. The latter is manual-only. The YN-565 EX has full TTL functionality but lack HSS and master flash capability, which the YN-568 EX II has. The YN-568 EX II on the other hand lacks a port for an external battery pack.

That's it, TIGR, thanks! Just what I want. YN-565 EX is the ticket. If she starts to do multiple flashes, we'll get her to do manual. Don't care for HSS and master/slave stuff. I think I can safely recommend that one.

Preesh!

John, I'm with you on the HSS and master capability. I think the 565 is a great recommendation.

The "II" has nothing to do with "radio work". In fact neither the yongnuo 568ex II or canon 580ex II can do any "radio work" without radio triggers. They have an optical master and slave abilities but nothing with radio.

With that said youngnou has several flashes that can do ETTL and manual (what I'd suggest for anyone getting their first flash. There are two with power out puts less then the canon 430ex II ( yn468ex II & yn500ex) and two that are more powerful then the 430ex II but less powerful then the 580ex II (yn565ex & yn568ex II)

Any of the 4 are good choices, it just depends on power and features that are needed/wanted

I'd go with the YN-500EX, as the YN-568 and 565 are generally too big for that little camera, and the 500EX is a great little flash.

HSS is very good to have on camera as well -

I hate to ressurect an old thread but its not too old. I am now in the market for a YN flash but had no diretion. I currently have a 430ex-II and looking for something comperable or better. Currently using some $10 trigger so no HSS or anything. The YN-500ex seems right up my alley but I am confused on a spec. Does it have a receiver build in so I only need a pair of transcevers? One for my cam and one for my 430 or will I need 3?

i have the yn-500ex and the canon 430ex-ii. the 500ex doesn't have a built in transceiver but it will do optical remote. i would say that both are pretty close.

No receiver built in the 500ex (although it does have HSS and TTL capabilities). The YN560III DOES have a receiver built in ;)

Well I was putting things in and out of my amazon cart yesterday and my wife hit the buy button thinking I wanted to buy them. Bless her for sure, but I didnt put a single receiver to match the pair of receivers so ill have to order a single. But she ended up ordering:

  • Yongnuo YN568EX
  • Yongnuo YN-622c triggers 2 pack
  • 2 flash brackets
  • 2 7 foot cowboy studio stands

So now to order 2 umbrless and the 3rd trigger and eventually some soft boxes.
