Why not? I don't have any 1D Mark III, but the times I've used one I've never seen any performance downgrade due to highlight tone priority, and I've never seen that in any other camera I've used either, including the of-similar-age 40D.

You're either not looking hard enough, or haven't used it enough to notice. HTP and ALO both have an impact on write speeds.

Don't have any 1D Mark III here, but just tried it on three different EOS models, from 2007 to 2013, and the result is the same. It has no impact whatsoever.

Besides, the original question was regarding how many shots you could fire in sequence, not how fast they'll go off. So it's not related to that question, even if it did make any difference.

The frames per second or buffer on my SL1 and 5D3 are unaffected by Highlight tone priority or Auto Lighting optimizer.

Chromatic Aberration correction also does not effect FPS, but it will reduce the buffer on my SL1, but not my 5D3.

The 1D3 is too old to have Chromatic Aberration correction or Auto Lighting Optimizer, so my bet is on the Custom Function just as Anders said.

Just tried it and I notice NO DIFFERENCE with HTP or ALO on or off to either the burst rate or burst maximum capacity.

...Well, one thing is for sure: throwing obscurantism at the topic may hardly help, though.

The bottom-line is High-ISO noise-reduction, ISO Safety-Shift, Higher-ISO speeds and RAW format do not have a major impact on "raw" processing speed, but DO SENSIBLY affect buffer-depth, which once filled-up everyone knows what happens with overall system speed.

The killer-whale of the pack, here, is High-ISO Noise Reduction. Just setting that alone leaves you with a 14-shot deep buffer, either in .JPG or RAW (it will not matter). Next one is ISO-Safety-Shift, followed closely by ISO-speed increments, mostly because of on-board computer's conservative ESTIMATE of buffer depth assuming a large variance of file sizes with floating ISO speeds, between 100 and 3200. In the latter case, you usually have substantially more buffer depth than that reported on the view finder.

HTP (which is probably the only on-board tonal processing gizmo worth having), has little-to-no impact on 1D3's overall performance, either in processing speed or buffer depth.
