I been pondering on this for some time !! I have a nice 40D and wife has a like new XSi...but i would like to up grade ??mainly better AF and Metering?/
Go with a used 7D or a new T5i ?? both are about same cost??i know 7D is a lot better built,,Video is not real important in decideing??

My thoughts are find a nice 7D,,but what do you all think??

we would jump to Nikon 7100 but have too much in Canon glass.

Thanks Ron

If improving focus is you goal, the 7D is an obvious choice. As for metering, thats more on you than the camera. Meters that depend on the reflectivity of the subject are all problematic until you learn how to manage the results. Do you like using the 40D better than the XSI? If so the controls on the 7D will be largely familiar, the rebel controls are a bit cumbersome once you've adapted to the dual wheel controls of the XXD, 7D line.

you didnt really say who this new camera would be for. In this case it appears that you might be trying to serve two masters.

If i didn't already have a 7D I don't know if I would choose that as the upgrade path but go to the 70D instead unless your talking a used 7D.

I don't understand how changing from the 40d to an entry level dslr is an upgrade. If you want to upgrade go for the 7d, or the 70d. The few times I held my old rebel xt after owning the 40d, it felt like a toy. If you mention what aspects of a camera you need to be upgraded, I'm sure you will get plenty of recommendations here.

I would think that there are quite a few feature advantages as well as IQ advantages in the T5i over the 40D. The 40D is quite old and ISO improvements alone would be a gfreat advantage, but on top of that you have better resolution, flip out screen, touch screen, way way better LCD screen, and video. All you really lose is the size, battery life, max shutter speed and maybe another feature or two.

Guess I wasn't thinking of it that way. I was just thinking entry vs. mid level camera.

I agree with what you first said Stefan A. If upgrading the xsi, then ya a new t5i or t4i would be great, but if upgrading a 40d, check out the 70d, or even the 60d... but I do agree with the 7d also.

Sounds like a good plan. The 60D does offer some improvements, but if you dont appreciate them then you probably ought to be learning more about your current camera.

If you're looking for better AF, the 7D would be a wonderful upgrade from your 40D. I made this upgrade a couple of years ago. Like you, I loved my 40d, but the 7D is an outstanding camera. AF is just tremendous. My keeper rate for sports went way up. The layout is very similar to the 40D, too, so it's very intuitive to use. If you haven't tried one, you should, before making a final decision.

I see you reside in the States so don't overlook the Canon Loyalty Program. Significant savings might be available depending on your final decision. These are cameras refurbished by Canon. They come with 1-year warranties, 14-day exchange and most people here that have taken advantage of the program get cameras with very low number of clicks. My 60D had about 40 clicks...needless to say it was new for all essential purposes.

Go to https://photography-on-the.net …ght=Canon+Loyalty+Program for the details. You have to trade in a Canon product but that can be a non-working P&S, even film cameras have been known to work. Often times you can pick up a trade from ebay for $15 and save yourself hundreds.
