PNY vs SanDisk..

So I am comparing these two:

PNY:

At nearly twice the price, I am wondering if the SanDisk are actually significantly better. One review mentions the PNY as having very low write speeds...but I am wondering if he did a low level format first in the camera for his tests, as Canon's seem to really behave differently when the cards are properly formatted vs new out of the package.

What are you shooting. I have a couple PNY cards and find they work great for 99% of what I shoot. For that last 1% I have yet to find an SD fast enough. Or maybe its my slow T3 thats not fast enough.

I am using a 70D, and yeah I have a couple of PNY cards and have found them to be good. Just wondering if there was a real advantage to these SanDisk cards or not.

I had a PNY card that I got in 2010 that broke in my H1 somehow, sometime. No idea what happened there. Other than that, I never had an issue with it. I've had zero issues with my Transcend or Sandisk cards, so I guess I'm pretty lucky. I'd buy the PNY for the heck of it at that price, but Sandisk is pretty reliable for hitting the advertised numbers.

Sandisk makes Sandisk. PNY sells rebranded goods. Who makes the PNY part? It's hard to compare without knowing who is making this particular run of cards for PNY.

Had bad luck with 2 PNY cards, never again. Might have been isolated cases but I am not temping fate. But I have never had any issues with sandisk

The problem with anecdotal experiences is they don't really tell you anything. I've had a Transcend card fail, but have used dozens of Kingstons for a decade or more with no failures. It would not be hard to find other members here who have the opposite experience with those two brands.

You will find plenty of people who have had issues with any of the brands (including Sandisk), and plenty of people who have had nothing but good experiences with any of the brands (including PNY). So, you pays your money and takes your chances.

And, just because a manufacturer does not own the chip foundry does not at all indicate they have poor quality.

This figure out who is actually making the card internals for that particular card, I had a PNY fall apart after being hit while the card reader left it exposed, the internals were all Sandisk.

Thanks for the feedback all, I decided to go ahead and get two of the SanDisk cards for now.

True, however, manufacturers like Sandisk sell off the cards which fail to pass inspection, and other companies then rebrand and sell them. So when the inside of the card is Sandisk but the outside is another brand, you may be getting a Sandisk reject.

I think it is a common practice with all electronic parts manufacturing, including memory. It is something that I have read, but have no first hand direct knowledge of. It seems reasonable to me for a company that wants to maximise it profits. Below are a couple of articles that I found which discuss binning, though they don't actually say that the chips may be re-branded:

Interesting info. Well, I use a couple of PNY Elite SD cards for 5D3 as backup and have not experienced any problems. They seem to be just as fast as Sandisk.

I should have said may sell off the lower end cards because I have no idea what Sandisk actually does. Somewhat similar to Green Giant green beans versus store branded green beans. They may have come off the same farm, but are not necessarily the same quality, but they may be the same quality. You just don't know. The buyer (store branded) would specify what quality they want and are willing to pay for.

binning certainly occurs. But as your last post suggests, it doesn't happen with all products.

generally memory (or silicon in general) that is binned performs, it just doesn't perform to spec. So if the product is resold, the customer facing specs are also lowered.

Generally the manufacturing failure rate should be so low that there would only be a small fraction from each lot not performing. I suspect these are the fake products you see on ebay, etc

I've used PNY for years with no problem. In fact I just bought my first SanDisk SD cards because they were on sale at Staples Office Supply.
