Speedlite won't flash on 60D! ???

Just got the Neewer TT560 Speedlite for my Canon 60D. Attached it to the hot shoe, checked the channel settings. It's in Manual mode. ISO 100. Camera detects that the external flash is attached...

But I can not get it to flash!

What am I missing? This is my first external speedlite, so maybe someone could spell it out for me.

Thanks .

Put it on Green Box Mode to see whether it will fire... then you can go from there

A) Do you have new batteries in it?
B) are you sure they are new?
C) does it fire when you push the button on the flash, but not when its in the hotshoe? If so.
D) go into the custom function settings and make sure the flash firing is enabled.

Green Box Mode? I'm afraid I don't know what that is.

On the the speedlite it's in M mode, as per the instructions.

Menu: Flash Control> Flash firing: Enable

It has brand new batteries.

When a press test on the speedlite, it flashes.

When I take a picture it does not flash.

Oh, OK, Green Box Mode on the dial. Switched it there. Took a picture, no flash.

Problem with the flash/camera communication. The green box mode has no flash control from the menu, either works or it doesn't.

The Neewer TT560 is an almost universally well received speedlite. It gets very high scores from the vast majority of Reviews coming from both consumers and Tech Companies. This particular unit may or may not be defective, but it's not an issue of shoddy merchandise.

It just doesn't seem to make sense. I know it's "communicating" with the camera, because I have confirmed that the camera detects an external flash being connected. Should an external flash automatically fire, regardless, when in green box mode?

I believe that just means that a switch is being made, not necessarily that the two devices are communicating.

There is a small switch that goes down whenever anything is connected to the hotshoe. The camera will act as though a flash is connected. This is a single contact flash, which I am not sure is compatible with the 60D. It would also not give you any TTL functionality, which is a major feature of new flashes.

There is a reason Canon flashes cost 6 times more than this $40 model.

It absolutely is compatible with the 60D, as I looked into that before buying it. I did find this comment somewhere in a Q & A between buyer and seller though:

"This will not work in a TTL/ETTL mode, but it can be triggered by your camera (or any, for that matter) provided your are capable of, and comfortable with, setting flash exposures manually."

From over at fredmiranda.com...

I purchased this because it says it works with Canon EOS cameras. It does not work with the T3i and Canon insists that no Canon camera will work with this flash.

Some Amazon reviews say it works, but manual mode only.

I always shoot in Manual mode, which is what it was set to in the begining. Is there specifically something else I need to do to set it to flash? First time using an external flash, so I just don't know. Thx.

Then it sounds like the unit might be defective.

Why not try this one?

It works with E-TTL, which is a very important feature.
