At least then she wont come back and ask you to give her basic training :P

I was a little worried about that. I remember other students blank looks when we got into aperture vs shutter when I was taking courses and that is just one part.

I love how so many people's response is "have them learn about DSLR's first before buying one, blah blah blah" without ever asking if that's been done already. Knowing about a DSLR doesn't mean you'd know about every brand, every model, and which one to choose. But what do I know?. ;-)a

FWIW, I purchased my first DSLR without knowing a single thing about them, and it took me all of a week to have things figured out. I would agree with the poster who mentioned the T3i, don't see the point in springing for the T5i, unless she's compelled to want the latest in that line. I own both lenses and I'd say for starting out, it was a fine pair.

Some moments are too amazing to be ruined with words.

Thanks for the info about the lenses. I'll check and see what the T3i packages come with. I don't know anything about Rebel line.

Totally agreed, but some people grasp that concep pretty quickly, some cannot.

Kind of like subnetting.

I totally agree, one doesnt have to know everything about dslr to get into it, one would need the drive to learn, and to capture.

What my was saying with my previous post was that i am okay with people asking and learning the whole concept of using these systems.

What I am more afraid and dont like is them getting my recommendation and coming back saying that my recommendation suck and they could have something better, something different.

A couple of the packages available here have the 55-250 in them. I'd highly recommend that she avoid packages that have the 75-300 in them.

I'd like to add that she and anyone else looking for a good lense, try the 40mm stm f2.8.

Pretty cheap, bit more expensive thatn 50mm 1.8 but smaller, quieter, and IMHO better build too.

Ha. I already told her to stay away from the 75-300. I checked it out when I was looking in that range several years ago and wound up with the 70-300 non L. Nice lens.

By the way. I have purchased some gear at The Camera Store in Calgary. My 24-105 for one. A decent place t deal with and no provincial tax.

Well it's almost time to watch the women's hockey final. Good luck to our southern neighbours and may the best women win - which is hopefully us ;)

The Camera Store is my favorite place to shop. :) But, we have another little gem of a camera store too: Robinson's Camera. One needs to have plenty of time while shopping at The Camera Store, as it is so insanely busy. Robinson's Camera (while being a much smaller store with less stock) is a wonderful and quiet little place, where one can get in and out pretty quickly. The prices are equally good at both.

I'm generally pretty pleased with my 70-300 non L. It is a bit soft at 300, but it makes for a nice, lightweight, and affordable EF telephoto zoom.

The good news, a hardly used Canon EOS Digital Rebel T5i with EF-S 18-55mm IS STM and EF-S 55-250mm IS II Lens will have good resale value.

I would think that EF lens kept their value more since it could be used on any can't AF cameras.

Maybe now that there's so many efs cameras, the tables have turned.

Both EF and EF-S lenses of quality tend to hold their value well. Obviously kit lenses and starter lenses retain less value than some of the high end lenses, but quality EF-S lenses like the 17-55 2.8 IS holds its resale value quite well.
