Both EF and EF-S lenses of quality tend to hold their value well. Obviously kit lenses and starter lenses retain less value than some of the high end lenses, but quality EF-S lenses like the 17-55 2.8 IS holds its resale value quite well.

Ah, totally forgot the specialize efs lens like then on euve mentioned.

In that case, you're right.

The point is, don't sweat the purchase too much. After the the Arctic trip if the boss doesn't care for the gear then they can sell it and recoup most of their money. They essentially rented the gear for the trip.

Did you mean antartic by the way? Prudhoe Bay and the Alaskan Pipeline are hardly travel spots.

No. The North.

Then ignore my previous comments about images of penguins. :)

I'd be interested in knowing where they are going. Perhaps I'm missing a garden spot previously unknown.

The Camera Store is my favorite place to shop. :) But, we have another little gem of a camera store too: Robinson's Camera. One needs to have plenty of time while shopping at The Camera Store, as it is so insanely busy. Robinson's Camera (while being a much smaller store with less stock) is a wonderful and quiet little place, where one can get in and out pretty quickly. The prices are equally good at both.

I'm generally pretty pleased with my 70-300 non L. It is a bit soft at 300, but it makes for a nice, lightweight, and affordable EF telephoto zoom.

That why I sold it and picked up the 70-200 F4 IS

I thought of that lens. Tough to keep under $1000 and I thought she might want a telephoto as well.

It's illegal to photograph them because Green Peace gets angry when they seem them behind bars.

if she wants to continue this as a hobby and is willing to buy used, I would go with a 60D and 18-135 IS STM

I still don't know if the camera is intended for your wife, or her boss, and who is going on the trip, and on reviewing the thread, it seems I'm not alone.

It makes a difference. We now know something about your wife's photographic experience and aspirations, but nothing about those of her boss. There is also the issue of where the ultimate recipient is going to get support (your wife from you, or her boss from her on the trip). Then there is the issue of the potential downside if indeed the camera is for her boss and it is poorly received, a situation that might best be avoided in the first place.

Any chance of a simple clarification?
Who is the camera for?
Who is going on the trip?
