My wife's boss. She has some information, she is a previous SLR owner, she is going to the camera store and going to make her own decisions.

It's starting to sound like T3i/T5i is a reasonable suggestion for her. I wouldn't worry about your advice coming back on you. I originally bought a low end Sony Alpha mirrorless with basic features only to take pictures of my expected child. My friend advised me to jump to a Rebel camera, and I'm glad he did. I realize now that there is much more lens selection and control. Now I'm exploring photography as a possible hobby, whereas if he didn't make that suggestion, I'd probably have my camera on the shelf. Some cameras, some lenses

He won't know how to use it. It will be no better than a point & shoot. Very best, I disagree. Just give it to them to use in green box mode. It'll be a significant upgrade over a small sensor point and shoot. I know some folks that create very snapshotish photos using rebels..... a point and shoot only makes low quality shots worse Sony A7siii/A7iv/ZV-1 - FE 24/1.4 - SY 24/2.8 - FE 35/2.8 - FE 50/1.8 - FE 85/1.8 - F 600/5.6 - CZ 100-300 - Tamron 17-28/2.8 - 28-75/2.8 - 28-200 RXD

Camera is small enough to travel safe and warm (Important in sub-frozen condition) in a pocket and no need to carry extra weight when every ounce means (That is if they really get out of transporting vehicle and need to hike). Photographer will not look smart compare to others with handicapping equipment, but I promise image will look much smarter. Total price is Mid to upper $300s, 3 extra battery and charger on ebay $20; 32 -64 GB fast SD card = 20-35$ (Preferably x2 or x3); and if you definitely need a zoom, adding EF-M 18-55mm to the kit should still cost under $500. Weak retaliates,

I suggested she explore that and a P&S as well. Thanks for the good suggestion. Image Editing OK

The good thing about EOS-M is that once you have it, you can use all your regular Canon EF, EFs lenses in full AF mode using electronically coupled adapter. So to say if photographer or photographer's significant other already has invested on expensive Canon lenses, all can be used on this small body too. On top of that using cheaper manual adapter, you can use any old lens in manual mode. That is if photographer find it that time is right to step up from Excellent 22mm lens that should come with camera and in reality is not much short of Canon's L lens in terms of sharpness and color reproduce. The only negative about EOS-M is AFing specially in darkness but then the new firmware is supposedly corrected the bug to great extend. Weak retaliates,
