I second the fun of fisheye.
No matter what you carry, have a 8mm for the real fun.

Heya,

I wouldn't use AV. It will be hard to use in-doors, due to light, and I'm going to bet you will need lower shutter times.

Take a tripod.
Use Manual mode, ISO 100 and leave it there.
Stop down aperture based on depth of field you want.
Learn to meter so you know to do with your shutter time, to get the right exposure for your aperture.

The 18-55 would do this fine, giving you options to go wide or get in close for a singled out shot.

Take the pancake (40mm) for portraits, or thin depth of field shots.

Very best,

I use a different approach. When I shoot auto shows indoors, I bring a wide angle lens, and maybe a small flash for fill. Filters don't help indoors, so I never brought them. As for the tripod, most convention centers won't allow them, so don't bring it.

Take your kit lens, the 18-55. Set the ISO to 800 and use Program AE or AV to shoot the shots. Lights tend to be bright, especially when they reflect off shiny surface on the cars. You will get great pictures. Be sure to kneel down to get some good ¾ shots from the front and back.

Also, take a fe minutes and look at any of the auto show threads here for inspiration! The members here take great shots and you will learn a lot by looking at their pictures!

I just visited the 2014 Chicago Auto Show. I used my 5d with 17-40L. You would not need this wide of an angle, but I tried to get the ropes out of the way. I would NOT take a tripod as people will get in your way, knock into it, and generally not get out of your way.

Here is a link to all of the photos that I took.

Hi I will be attending an auto show (indoor in a convention center) this weekend and I would like to know which lens to use?
Also do I need to use any of the lens filter like the UV, FLD, CPL? which setting is best to use?
Last time ( I had just purchased the DSLR by then) I had take some snaps for the Auto show & wasn't very pleased. I don't remember how all the pictures were... but I do remember it was mostly very bright and had to spend lots of time in LR4 to correct it. This time want to get good shots. I was thinking to use AV (Aperture Priority AE).
This is just a hobby and not making any money out of it..
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I agree with the other posters, the 18-55 without a CPL will work but bring everything, you may be able to use a tripod and a flash

Here's the EF 24-105 on a 6d.

I could have gotten away with using a 35mm prime for 90% of the shots that day. It was so crowded around the bat mobile, that I had to get as close as possible and needed the 24mm to get the shot. Could probably use a 50 as well if it's not too crowded.

edit: I shot these in Av at the time (handheld), but I've learned my lesson since then and tend to shoot in Manual for most shots, especially for low light. I like to use Av when shooting any action or parades at high noon.

I was lucky enough to be in the Dark Knight Rises for the stadium scene and they brought out all of them. I must say they do sound super sweet

This was at the Carl Casper Car Show in Louisville KY in Feb '13. It was the 50th anniversary of the show and there were a ton of people there.
