Firstly I don't know if I'm in right section of the forum, but don't see a newbie section. I have had my Canon Eos 600d for a while now but only started experimenting with all the different modes including manual mode. I recently purchased a Canon EF 70-300 IS USM zoom lens, been using it in all different modes including scene intelligent auto mode but mainly sticking to manual mode where I can change shutter speed,ISO and aperture. I was hooting in low light [cloudy day] and took photos using zoom Len without zooming and also shots of zooming in using various shutter speeds and ISO settings and every time the camera was taking approx 7-10seconds to fire is this normal?, I even changed the focus on lens to manual but camera still took 7-10 to take photo. I'm no expert like it said I've just started using these modes and my new lens can anyone tell me if and where I might be going wrong or is this normal procedure for zoom lenses in low light and will it be quicker on a very sunny day,as my 18-55 kit lens fires immediately but I understand it has much shorter focal length, I'm just wondering if zoom lens is faulty in anyway as I've just recently bought it from Ebay any help is much appreciated.

Kind Regards
George

Do you have the timer mode set? There is no other reason for that kind of delay consistently unless you have the drive mode set to the timer mode.

If all else fails you might try to do a reset to the factory settings by following the steps below. If you can recall any special settings you may configured, make a note before doing a reset so you can do them over.

To reset the camera to the original settings, follow these steps:

1) Press the Menu button, and then press the right cross key to select the Setup 3 menu.

2) Press the down cross key to select Clear settings, and then press the Set button.

3) To reset the camera to factory settings, press the up or down cross key to select Clear all camera settings, and then press the Set button. The Clear all camera settings confirmation screen appears.

4) Press the right cross key to select OK.

Firstly thanks for speedy reply much appreciated, when I looked at my camera settings hey presto you found the problem,i don't know how it got on to that setting as I've only ever used single shot or continuous mode and self timer mode is for when you want to include yourself in shots amongst other things. I feel so stupid not checking that feature myself but like I said I don remember clicking on that specific setting but must have done when exploring camera and settings but I'm really thankful for your quick diagnosis of my problem and will never make same mistake again. Which focus mode is best to capture sports events such as motocross, horse racing, football and so on would manual focus be better as it is quicker than waiting for auto focus to set or is my thinking wrong?. Also I have a Canon speedlite 430EX 11 and the quickest sync with my camera is 1/250 of a second is there anyway around this and upping the sync speed? I have read other external flashes are capable of going much higher sync wise is this true?. :)

Kind Regards
George

In answer to your 430 EXII question, you can check the manual or the Quick Guide Canon has on line, which I've attached here. See page 2 of the Quick Guide where it reads...

High-Speed Sync
When you select this option the 430EX II will flash stroboscopically, in sync with the shutter as it crosses the focal plane. Although this allows the 430EX II to synchronize with shutter speeds higher than 1/200 or 1/250 second, it also reduces light output as shutter speeds move progressively past the normal maximum sync speed.

Things like this Quick Guide I get printed double sided at a local Staples onto good quality card stock. They are usually two pages, designed to fold into thirds and make good reference materail to throw in a camera bag. A complete list of these guides is available at http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …s/2011/quick_guides.shtml (external link).
