I've been shooting a few more Crossfit photos - this was a collab between Rich, the owner of Mountain Strength Crossfit and myself for his FB and other social media use

This was caught mid jerk, we were trying to show some power and explosiveness.

Here, Rich is pushing a loaded sled down his short indoor track. I wanted to shoot this outdoors in the parking lot with less clutter behind, but the snow and ice weren't going to let that happen this day.

Lastly, a candid shot from the class that was running prior to me arriving - this was a partner row, and each person standing is waiting for their turn to hop on the rower and do another 500m.

I have a few more gym / fitness style shoots in the pipes, so I'm looking for feedback on what worked and didn't work here.

Thanks!

On #1 you wont need a logo if you get the DOF a little deeper with the logo on the back wall.... I would have preferred the bar to be a little higher up with the push just starting or even halfway with the bar just above the head and the knees slightly bent.. It is a shame that the violent movement messes up the shorts which create a distraction.

#2 does not do anything for me.

#3 has a little bit of tilt and misses something - it should create a feeling of intensity and concentration but that does not come across somehow.

Busy backgrounds. This sort of stuff is where off camera flash can really be beneficial as you can isolate the subjects.

vk2gwk:

1) Something more like this? We took a series, but that was the one that felt most explosive to me.

The watermark is getting pulled in from my hosting site, it's an easy thing to remove, and they won't be including it on their website versions, I don't think.

2) Care to elaborate? What is it missing?

3) I think it suffers because it was the end of the WOD, everyone was tanked. How about something from mid-WOD - a box jump?

windpig: - I was using minimal off camera flash - mostly just some bounce flash for ambient fill, as the room had little natural light - in a situation like this, where you're shooting lots of people, moving in a small cluttered space, do you have suggestions how I can avoid the busy backgrounds? I do agree with you, I'd prefer them to be cleaner (heck - outdoors is my preference) - but sometimes, you've got what you've got.

In all the color shots, the exposed skin--faces, arms, legs--is too harshly lit. It includes white spots or white edges. I don't know how to remedy this, I can only describe the effect. It makes the athletes look less three-dimensional. Others here who are knowledgeable about lighting may be able to advise you.

I can't elaborate about #2... sorry. it just does not do anything for me.

I think when you try to make a series for an outfit like this, as a photographer you should try to catch the essentials of why people would like to join: building their body and stamina and having fun.
In the images these essentials should dominate, which means that you have to get rid of the distractions and clutter. Sometimes that means that you tidy up or move things (machines, props and the like) out of the scene. When you explain that to the client they'll understand and cooperate.

Also you can try a shooting angle with the least clutter in the background. Like in your last shot (box jump) there is a plain wooden vertical platform right. Changing your shooting angle you would have had the box diagonal and a less cluttered background.

Consider your DOF: just sufficient to get the person/activity sharp - especially faces and eyes - but the rest as vague as you can. That means consciously considering the focal length/aperture and the ratio between your distance to the subject and the distance of the subject from the background. Sometimes that may imply moving a thing, like the box further away from the background or shooting closer up to the subject.

And make sure the people in the image have a facial expression that matches the activity, preferably with a smile where appropriate. You want to show the world their dedication and fun.
